Click here Governor Issues Executive Order Making Employment for People with Disabilities a Top Priority in KentuckyOn May 15, 2018, Governor Matt Bevin signed Executive Order 2018-328 to add Kentucky to the growing list of states with Employment First policies for people with disabilities. This Order will ensure that competitive and integrated employment in the community shall be considered the first and primary option for persons with disabilities who want to become employed. This means that all state agencies will work toward making sure people with disabilities have opportunities to work in the community and offer valuable skills to their employers while receiving a competitive wage. Kentucky Works Newsletter LaunchThis is the initial launch of our KentuckyWorks newsletter to keep you posted about the latest employment news for people with disabilities in Kentucky. We will be sharing this newsletter at the beginning of each month. We want to make sure you know about any employment fairs and events, community conversations, presentations, post-secondary opportunities, or other employment initiatives for people with disabilities through the Commonwealth. KentuckyWorks Post-Secondary Community ConversationNearly 100 people attended a community conversation on May 21 for self-advocates, families, and professionals to discuss how to increase post-secondary opportunities for youth with intellectual disabilities (ID). The conversation was held simultaneously in Morehead, Murray, and Lexington via video conference. Guest speakers included Cate Weir, Project Director for the Think College National Coordinating Center; Dr. Harold Kleinert, former director of the University of Kentucky Human Development Institute; and Dr. Erik Carter, Special Education Professor at Vanderbilt. The Summer Leadership Experience is an overnight camp that will begin at 1 pm on Sunday, July 8th and will run through Wednesday, July 11th. Video SeriesOver the past year, HDI has released six chapters in our "HDI is ..." video series to share the good work we do here at the Human Development Institute across the lifespan for people with disabilities. In February, we shared our fifth chapter in the HDI video series to highlight our work promoting healthy living for people with disabilities. And in March, we shared a video highlighting our work toward promoting inclusion and post-secondary support. Transportation Initiative Seeks to Find Solutions for Rural KentuckyKentuckyWorks and Kentucky E3TC held a joint community conversation on March 20 in Jackson, Kentucky. The goal of the activity was to bring together a diverse group of concerned citizens in the Breathitt County area to examine what could be done to increase transportation options for people with disabilities. Our expectation is that success with this task will result in an increase in inclusion. ![]() KentuckyWorks Morehead Community Conversation UpdateA Community Conversation held in Morehead, Kentucky on February 27, 2017 identified two major projects local volunteers determined would provide significant initiative to promote the transition of youth from school to work. One was the development of a Project Search like activity and remains in the early stages of development. The other is an employer engagement project referred to as the Inclusive Community Project for which a significant amount of progress occurred during the reporting period.
