There's not long left now until you arrive in York!

Welcome and arrival can feel like a huge part of university life, however, opportunities and support continue throughout your time at university.

Today, we’ll be talking you through life beyond your welcome week(s), and what you can expect from your time at York and as a member of David Kato College.

A reminder about Welcome events

In addition to your studies, there are plenty of exciting opportunities for you to explore to enhance your time at York, as well as plenty of teams and individuals here to support you.

Events

Make sure to download the MyUoY app to keep up to date with the range of events on offer for you each week!

College sport

In addition to events, each college has an amazing variety of sports teams open to all levels of ability - making them a great way of meeting new people and staying active.

Currently, we share our teams with Anne Lister College, meaning our joint membership gives you access to as many sports as you want!

College music

Interested in learning an instrument, or finding places to rehearse with others?

Our shared college music scheme offers spaces and resources for those with a musical mind - including our instrument lending library, practice rooms, recording studios and more.

College committee

Looking to develop your leadership, teamwork or organisational skills? Why not run for a position in our college committee? We hold elections around November - keep an eye on our social media for more information!

Each year, colleges elect a student committee to represent you and your community as well as organising a huge range of events and community building activities.

This year’s committee has been hard at work planning your Welcome experience - make sure to say hi to them during your move-in and first few weeks!

And maybe... something new?

Do you have an idea for an event you’d like to see the college host? Why not get in touch with us and see if we can help bring it to life!

What to expect: support and wellbeing

Although attending university can be your first taste of truly independent learning, you are never alone.

Wherever in the world you may be joining us from, it’s important to know that, here at York, asking for help is seen as completely normal and a very welcomed thing to do for any and all of our students. A university degree can sometimes be challenging, but the sooner you ask for support, the sooner we can help you get things back on track.

College-based support

Your college team

As mentioned in our email last week, your college team is a first point of call for support with whatever issues you may be facing. The team can assist with all manner of problems that students face, and if they can’t help they will help you get to the service who can.

STYCs / STYMs

All undergraduate residential students will be assigned Second and Third Year Contacts (STYCs) by accommodation block to help you settle in for your first week of university life.

Our Second and Third Year Mentor (STYMs) programme continues the support you received throughout Freshers Week with check-ins and events throughout the year.

Wider university services

Regardless of your college membership or course, all students are welcome to use our wider university services.

Our Campus Safety team offers 24/7 support to everyone who lives, studies or works at the University, with all members of the team trained in first aid and mental health first aid. We strongly encourage you to also download our SafeZone app, which gives you instant contact with the team at the touch of a button.

Our central Student Hub offers advice and support with financial concerns, budgeting advice, academic progress, tenancy agreements and more.

For mental health support, our Open Door team and TalkCampus tool are available to offer practitioner and peer support respectively.

Student Union support

In addition to the University, your Student Unions can offer support and advice on any number of issues that you may face.
