Welcome to the November edition of the Salamanca Market stallholder news

Hi Everyone,

Christmas is fast approaching and along with the market this Saturday, we will see the city mark the start of the festive season with the annual Myer Hobart Christmas Pageant, which kicks off at 10.30 am and finishes around 12 pm. It will be a busy time in Hobart and I expect that some of the families enjoying the pageant will also make their way to the market. Our market team are also putting together festive activities to happen a bit closer to Christmas. Santa is booked with some accompanying music for Saturday 16 and 23 December and we are working on some targeted promotion. As always we are happy to hear any ideas from our stallholders on making the most of this time of year and I'd invite you to get in touch to discuss at any time.

Santa's Plan for Christmas

Our Christmas promotion is only a few weeks away and we would like to encourage all stallholders to send us some details about what products they would like to showcase in our Christmas promotions.

Please send us some photos and information of your best Christmas products.
Email salamancamarket@hobartcity.com.au

Handmade gifts
The focus will be on a handmade Christmas and we would love to hear from stallholders who have special gift packs or products that they would like us to promote. There are SO many handmade gifts at the market and with over 300 stalls, the market is a one-stop Christmas shop from start to finish! Think handmade pottery, art, woodwork, wool, handmade wines and gins, hand-cooked jams, hand-grown plants, handmade skincare and jewellery - the list is endless!

Christmas elves
Our information booth will be decorated for Christmas and our volunteers will become helpful Christmas elves with an important role! They will be helping our customers find specific products and stalls within the market AND they will also have Santa's special gift guide list. If people are not sure what to get someone for Christmas, they can pop along and see one of our volunteers who will consult Santa's list and suggest some gift ideas.

Dress up your stall
To help make our Christmas markets more festive and fun, please consider dressing up your stalls, pop on a pair of reindeer ears, or add a festive element to the front of your stall. A little bit of creativity to match the season will spread some Christmas joy and could help you make a few more sales.

Christmas cheer
To bring some Christmas cheer to the market, we are planning to have photos with Santa again this year and some Christmas music. This helps bring a happy element to the market and encourages local families to visit and shop while they are there.

Christmas promotion
Our Christmas promotion this year will include some radio ads to encourage local audiences to visit the market for their Christmas gift shopping. We will also be doing quite a lot of social advertising in the lead up to the final Christmas market on 23 December. This will be the perfect time for people to get their last minute gifts and to stock up on all of the fresh produce, berries, drinks, jams and bakery products for Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Christmas tags
Don't forget to tag #salamancamarket in your social media posts so we can see what you are up to and reshare content for you.

Watch your money

As Christmas approaches there will be an increase in people shopping at the market and unfortunately also an increased risk of theft and anti-social behaviour.

Rising interest rates and difficult economic conditions can lead to people taking all sorts of risks to get cash. Market stalls can be an attractive target as they are in the open, have stock on display, are often crowded and have minimal security. A few simple steps may help to reduce the possibility of opportunistic theft.

  1. Keep cash or tills on your person or located in areas with no public access and out of site.
  2. Carefully consider where you place any high-value stock in your stall.
  3. Try not to turn your back on customers, this can be a ploy to distract you while they steal from you.
  4. Report any theft or suspected theft immediately. Reporting to the police and market supervisor with a description, if you have seen someone stealing, will make it easier to identify individuals or groups operating in the market.

Market crew can usually be onsite quicker than police and can keep tabs on an offender while the police are on their way. Stallholders should not attempt to physically confront suspected offenders. If you recognise someone with a suspected history of theft in the market, contact the market supervisor.

  1. If your stall has changed, or if you have new branding or new products, or if you haven't refreshed your information in the last year, then you need to update your listing.
  2. Take good photos on your phone, iPad or get someone to take them for you.
  3. Complete the form and upload the images.
