As we observe this National “Minority” Health Month, the efforts to advance health equity face rising challenges. This includes denial of the existence of systemic racism in medicine and efforts to ban Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs in medical education. Proposed bills like the EDUCATE Act are attempts to roll back progress by cutting federal support for DEI initiatives in medical schools.
Despite the pushback, National Medical Fellowships remains firm in its belief that the need for a diverse health care workforce has never been more critical.

NMF “helped me through some really tough times and no matter what resources I currently have, I still feel I, too, can make a difference by giving back what I can,” said NMF scholar Jeremiah Whittington, a fourth-year student at University of Illinois College of Medicine, who recently matched in family medicine at Georgetown University.

We invite our alumni to join the NMF Scholarships Application Review Committee to help shape the next generation of health care leaders. As a committee member, you will review scholarship applications and provide insights into students' challenges and aspirations. This role empowers you give back and deepen your connection with NMF's mission to advance health equity. The process is flexible, with four annual cycles; we hope you can spare a few hours to identify future NMF scholars. Training and support are provided.

This summer’s series features NMF scholar Joel Burt-Miller and alumna Dr. Aerial Petty. Mr. Burt-Miller is a recently matched Pediatrics-Psychiatry resident and soon-to-be graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine Greenville, and the secretary of NMF’s Young Leaders Council.
Dr. Aerial Petty is a Family Medicine PGY-3, Chief Resident at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and the vice president of the NMF’s Young Leaders Council.
