July 2020 SIAS newsletter

The current covid 19 crisis has made us, at the SIAS committee, rethink ways that we can bring cpd, social and volunteering opportunities to you.

We are delighted to have shared some fantastic online events with you over the past month and are looking forward to continuing to provide some new events online.

Please do scroll down for more information on SIAS committee vacancies, the SIAS best exam mark competition and more online cpd, social and charity opportunities.

Volunteer vacancy – SIAS committee members

A few current committee members will finish their term served at the end of 2020 and SIAS is seeking to appoint new members to broaden the collective experience of the committee. Despite the ongoing lockdown, we are continuing to offer various exciting initiatives and looking forward to 2021 where we hope to begin running our full event schedule again.

There are a wide variety of challenges to get involved in to ensure that SIAS best serves its members including:

  • Enhancing our web experience for our members, including hosting online events;
  • Post lockdown, running monthly CPD events at the Staple Inn;
  • Organising and hosting charity and social events; and
  • Sharing new initiatives.

SIAS committee members spend approximately five hours a month working on their specific initiatives. There are meetings hosted monthly during evenings in London (virtually at present) and attendance at these meetings is required.

Tenure is reviewable annually, depending on changing circumstances and it is hoped that members of this committee will be happy to serve from three years up to seven years.

To volunteer for this vacancy please contact Jonathan Boardley, SIAS’ Honorary Secretary, using the below link. When contacting Jonathan please can you briefly indicate:

  • Your relevant experience and reason(s) for wishing to be involved and
  • A note of your ARN.

How did the first virtual SIAS programme event go?

SIAS held its first virtual social by hosting an Origami tutorial.  The event was held over Zoom with around 15 people joining.  The tutorial lasted an hour with people being shown how to fold a Lotus, two ways to make a Lily and a butterfly.  The butterfly was the hardest to fold virtually, perhaps demonstrating how being virtual can sometimes be harder!  People enjoyed the challenge of the folds and the results that they got.  We may run a similar event later in the year if there is interest.

How did the COVID-19 online talk go?

SIAS organised its second cpd Zoom event on 8th July 2020. Nicola Oliver gave a very insightful and informative talk on the effects of Covid-19 on UK and the effectiveness of the measures taken by the government.  She also challenged our members to think about what can be learnt from what we have experienced to date to be better prepared both for a second wave of Covid-19 infections and other pandemics.

As is usual for our talks, attendees participated energetically making the best use of the Zoom chat functionality. Their many thoughtful questions and comments added further depth and challenge to the discussion.

Congratulations in particular to Stuart Hicks and David Salisbury, who swiped up the champagne prizes for best contributions.
