Senior Trophy Victory
Congratulations to The High School Senior 2 hockey team which defeated St Andrew's College 1-0 to win the Leinster Hockey Association Schoolboys Senior Trophy for the fifth time since 2014. We warmly congratulate the team on the significance of its achievements in 2021-22 and wish all members of the squad every success in future competitions. Leinster Schools Junior Cup Final
The High School Junior Cup Team qualified to compete in the inaugural Leinster Schools Junior Cup final last week. Our first match was played against Wesley College which we won 37-7. We played our second match against Gorey Community School. It was a difficult game but we came out on top beating them 29-7. We played our final qualifying match against Wilson’s Hospital School. They scored the first try but due to some exceptional teamwork we won 24-10 securing our place in the overall final. We played the final match against Gorey Community School; unfortunately, we got tired and the result did not go our way. Overall, it was a very enjoyable day and an incredibly positive end to an amazing season. The whole team should like to
thank our coaches for the support we received which was greatly appreciated and made all the difference to us.
UCD Entrance Scholars
We are delighted to have been advised by the President of UCD that a record number of immediate past pupils from The High School have been awarded Entrance Scholarships in recognition of their high levels of performance in the Leaving Certificate examinations. The awards are made to first year students who have achieved 560 points or more in their Leaving Certificate examination. In 2021, Isobel Bowen, Cate Dooley, Ethan Flynn, John Kennedy, Stepan Letsko, Ian Mayrs, Conor Moore, Anna O'Shea, and Eimear Quinn achieved this notable distinction and were awarded Entrance Scholarships. We offer these and all recent past pupils of The High School our warmest congratulations on their achievements and wish them every success in their academic careers. All Ireland Schools (Boys) Hockey Championship
The High School Senior 1 hockey team which qualified to compete in the semi-final stage of the All Ireland Schools (Boys) Hockey Championship plate competition named in honour of the late Herbie Sharman. The team earned its place in the plate competition having been placed second in their original All Ireland Schools (Boys) Hockey Championship group. Despite their best efforts victory eluded our players this time around. We should like to thank the Senior 1 team for giving us a thrilling season and give a special mention to Form 6 players who have represented HSD over the last six years with dedication and commitment second to none. Junior Rugby TourRecently, a large group of Form 1, 2, and 3 pupils who play rugby at The High School embarked on three separate end-of-season tours. This significant excursion involved completing a journey to and from Cork, playing a series of matches against schools and clubs, attending a Munster Rugby fixture, and engaging in a range of recreation activities including ziplining, films, and musical theatre. Pupils travelled early in the morning: the atmosphere on the bus was excellent from the outset with pupils playing music and singing all the way down to Cork. Everyone enjoyed their overnight accommodation at a local hotel. The next day Form 1 boys and girls (as well as Junior Girls) played matches against Bandon Grammar School at A and B level whilst Form 2 boys
played fixtures against Midleton College and Bandon Rugby Football Club. The trip was a great success both on and off the pitch and represented a wonderful team bonding activity.
Fundraising Textbook GiveawayPupils are invited at any point during either lunch to browse second-hand textbooks that have been reclaimed from the bag racks and elsewhere throughout the school. If pupils wish to take a textbook that is of use to them - or indeed if they happen to be reunited with one of their own books - they are encouraged to contribute a few euro to support the Irish Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal.
Senior Common Room
Over the years current Form 6 pupils have watched the preceding year groups settle into the sanctuary of the Senior Common Room. However, when access to the space was allocated to staff due to the imposition of public health restrictions during the Covid-19 pandemic we wondered if we would ever be able to use it during our time at the school. Fortunately, restrictions have been eased and last Monday the Senior Common Room was filled with the smiling faces of Form 6 pupils. Our year group is ecstatic - we already feel settled in. The Senior Common Room represents a safe space where we as a year group are able to unwind and unite. The endless cups of tea and riveting rounds of ping-pong keep the spirits up during an otherwise stressful time. It
has brought us together as a year group and it is a great pleasure to have our very own place in The High School! Past Pupil Gala DinnerIt seems like such a long time since the amazing night that was our 150th Gala Dinner where we celebrated and danced until the small hours. We are really looking forward to welcoming you back to the school again for a super night to celebrate being able to gather together again after a very long two years! International Sports PhotographsAround this time of year we begin to take the school sports photographs. If you have represented Ireland in a sport outside school in the last two years, please contact Ms Fallon here to ensure that your achievement is included in the Erasmian and Diocesan Times. Form 1 ArtPupils in Form 1 have created a collection of portraits of silverware capturing the glint and glare of light on metal. Their work is on display in the exhibition space on the C Floor outside the Art Room.
PPU Hockey ChallengeThe annual HS&D PPU Hockey Challenge between The High School and Diocesan Past Pupils’ Union and the HSD Senior girls’ and boys' hockey teams took place on Friday 1 April at 5.00 pm. It was a thoroughly enjoyable social and sporting event in spite of the inclement weather.
