Advancing Medicine with the AANHPI Communities
In honor of NMF Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) community members, NMF proudly celebrates AANHPI month.
We admirably acknowledge the contributions of AANHPI people to the field of medicine and proudly recognize the numerous advancements in medicine. Isolating and purifying adrenaline, discovering and developing early treatments for gout, advancing in vitro fertilization (which led to the first “test tube baby”) and more are all breakthroughs advanced by AANHPI physicians.
Supporting our AANHPI communities and working towards establishing better health outcomes is an essential aspect of the NMF mission mandate.
Ways to Improve Health Outcomes in Our AANHPI Communities
- Understand the social and political determinants of health within the AANHPI communities.
Considering the unique environments, cultures, histories, and circumstances of AANHPI populations is fundamental to improving health outcomes and reducing longstanding disparities and inequities. (Source: U.S. Department of Health and Human Services)
- Take initiative, build trust, and increase patient diversity in clinical research trial research.
The mission of the NMF Diversity in Clinical Trials Research (Dctr) training program is to increase underrepresented patient engagement and participation in clinical research to ensure that treatment and preventative regimens are thoroughly investigated across all populations.
- Examine the unique experiences among AANHPI populations.
Broad data for AANHPI populations often mask underlying disparities among subgroups of the population and disaggregated data are often not available or reported for Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander people. (Source: KFF)
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than one in five U.S. adults live with a mental illness— your holistic wellbeing should not be ignored.
NMF is committed to providing access to behavioral health education for aspiring psychiatrists and other therapists. We aim to ensure that diverse communities can access the mental health care they need and deserve.
The Horizon Behavioral Health Scholarship, established in partnership with NMF, is an important first step in addressing the critical need for diverse psychiatrists. Empowering more diverse psychiatrists increases our impact and boosts efforts to address the treatment of mental health issues within marginalized communities.
