National Report on Tourism Employment Projections

Tourism HR Canada has just released new research around the recovery of Tourism employment and forecasts for the sector to 2025.  Projections of Tourism Employment Demand in Canada, 2019 – 2025 provides initial results from a three-year project to update and enhance the labour supply and demand projections for the tourism sector. Produced by The Conference Board of Canada, the report’s findings are based primarily on job demand stemming from the business perspective, but also include discussion of some outcomes that arise from labour challenges on the supply side, namely in the form of job vacancies.

Among the key findings:
- Employment in the tourism sector is projected to register more than 1.96 million jobs in 2022, or approximately 94 per cent of pre-pandemic level.
- By 2025, employment in the tourism sector is projected to surpass pre-pandemic levels—growing by 2.5% over 2019’s employment level.
- Tourism’s share of overall employment in Canada in 2025 (10.5%) will fall just shy of its share in 2019 (10.8%).
- While workforce recovery is projected to be uneven across the five tourism industry groups, employment gains in the food and beverage services industry will be a key driver of overall tourism employment growth.  Download your complimentary copy.

Sector Labour Market Dashboard

NEW! Workforce Insights

The workforce and labour market are constantly changing. Access to timely information is important to understand the challenges employers in Nova Scotia are facing. In collaboration with the 14 Industry Sector Councils and employers across the province, AISC created a Labour Market Dashboard. With the intention of gathering and analyzing data, this tool will provide employers with the necessary information to execute more effective workforce planning. This dashboard aims to support the efforts of all members of the labour force ecosystem to move forward in creating a more adaptable workforce and robust economy. You can review specific data by geographic area, compare key data points between sectors, locations and more.

Revisions to NS Apprentice Supervision Ratio

In Response to Labour Demands

On July 6th Labour, Skills and Immigration and the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency announced changes to the Nova Scotia Apprenticeship training requirements.  These amendments will allow more skilled workers to seek Certification. Revisions to the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act General Regulations include: for most trades, increasing the number of apprentices a journeyperson can train from one to two; exempting youth apprentices from the journeyperson-to-apprentice ratio to remove barriers to youth apprenticeship while still providing direct supervision; adding flexibility for virtual supervision. View Provincial Release.

TIANS and NSTHRC continue to partner with the NS Apprenticeship Agency on the Serve it Up, High School Culinary Program, designed to encourage youth to explore the Cook Trade. Check out the Serve it Up Online Hub.
