TIME TO REGISTER IS RUNNING OUT!
In a few weeks, we at IFACCA along with our co-hosts, the Swedish Arts Council, will welcome delegates from around the world to Stockholm for the 9th World Summit on Arts and Culture on Safeguarding Artistic Freedom. Registration for the Summit will close on 14 April 2023 at 21.00 CEST, so please hurry
to ensure your seat at this important conversation. The full programme is now available, and you can also view the breadth of inspiring participants spanning over 60 countries across Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and the Pacific.
We are very happy to convene the World Summit in the Nordic region for the first time - in Sweden, a country with a strong tradition of democracy and longstanding commitment to championing artistic freedom and in partnership with the Swedish Arts Council.
Since the 8th World Summit in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in 2019, the world has changed significantly. In such troubled times, it is more essential than ever that we come together to discuss critical issues and identify actionable ideas and contribute to strengthening arts and culture for individual and collective life worldwide. Collective reflection is at the heart of our World Summit, which will bring together IFACCA Members, leading policy makers, researchers, managers and practitioners from the arts, cultural and creative sectors, and related fields, to foster meaningful and lasting international exchange; to leverage collective leadership; and to strengthen the work of government arts and culture agencies.
In anticipation of the conversations at the Summit, we had released the 9th World Summit Discussion Paper in May 2022, which explores the Summit theme, Safeguarding Artistic Freedom and intends to spark initial thinking around some of the complex issues surrounding artistic freedom and the ways in which we might respond. The Discussion Paper underlines that the concept of artistic freedom and its lived experience – or lack thereof – differs across geographies and cultures. These experiences can only be understood and shared if we first lay common ground for our discussions. We hope our World Summit will provide just such a space of trust in which
difference is embraced, open conversation is fostered, and a climate of mutual learning and receptiveness for other perspectives is valued.
In addition to the Discussion Paper, you will also find other resources related to artistic freedom here on the Summit website. We hope that these publications will inspire Summit delegates and our ACORNS readers alike. The official conversation may not begin in situ for another few weeks, but we encourage you have a read and spark the conversation at #ArtSummitSweden.
The World Summit consists of a full immersion delegate experience that starts with the conference programme during the day and culminates in the evenings with a cultural programme. This is an integral part of the programme to enable a collegial space for networking and to experience some of the wonderful arts and cultural offerings in Sweden. This edition of the cultural programme commissioned by Riksteatern. Please visit the cultural programme here for more details.
We look forward to meeting many of you in Stockholm. We will also be livestreaming the plenary sessions of the Summit for those unable to join us in person at the Summit – watch out for the details on artsummit.org, our Twitter and Facebook channels.
And do join our conversation on how we can – and why we should – safeguard artistic freedom at #ArtSummitSweden. We would love to hear your voice!
