DEC 5, 2023 — Being a factory driver with support from an automotive manufacturer is the ultimate dream of nearly every race car driver. Two dozen young competitors, many of whom are SCCA® members, were seeking exactly that during the annual Mazda Spec MX-5 Shootout and Mazda MX-5 Cup Shootout conducted Nov. 15-16, 2023, at Carolina Motorsports Park in Kershaw, SC.

Over the two days, Mazda’s panel of judges were eyeing not just lap times around the circuit – also under scrutiny was each driver’s ability to digest data and apply coaching advice to improve performance throughout the event. Atop that, contestants were judged on savvy media skills, as well as their attitude and personality when it came to displaying gusto and a desire to learn.

Track Night: Big Numbers, Big Savings, Big Fun

For instance, 130 is a thrilling number when you realize that’s the speed you were hitting on the back stretch. And 200? The answer to that isn’t so easy, as one viewer might see entertainment gold while the other walks out of the theater. Sure, there are movies racing enthusiasts generally agree upon as solid (Ford v Ferrari and Rush come to mind), but for every critically-acclaimed flick, there are countless poor attempts to capture the passion of the motoring world – a topic author Jack Swansey recently tackled on Hagerty.com/media.

To understand the subject at hand, Swansey walks readers through the basic structure of most films. “There is a series of story beats that tend to occur in good movies – I often see screenwriter Christopher Vogler’s 12-step ‘Hero’s Journey’ – but the most basic version is the famous ‘three-act structure,’” Swansey explains.
