Professor Wargo is the Chair of Environmental Studies, Professor of Environmental Health and Politics at YSE, and a visiting and consulting Professor at Yale-NUS College. His research explores threats to human health posed by environmental hazards, including exposures to pesticides, vehicle emissions, toxins in foods, plastics, flame-retardants, metals, and chemicals released outdoors and indoors. He will teach EVST 255 Environmental Law and Politics in the spring and EVST 496 Senior Research Project and Colloquium this fall and spring. Professor Fotos is the EVST DUS and Lecturer in Political Science. He studies the relationship between political theory and policy analysis. This year he will teach EVST 212 Democracy and Sustainability, PLSC 256 American Political Institutions, EVST 060 Topics in Environmental Justice, and EVST 496 Senior Research Project and Colloquium. Professor Freidenburg is the EVST Associate DUS, BS Program, and Lecturer at YSE. She is an ecologist who conducts research in freshwater ecosystems with a particular focus on amphibians. This fall she will teach EVST 234L Field Science: Environment and Sustainability, EVST 323 Wetlands Ecology, Conservation & Management, and EVST 496 Senior Research Project and Colloquium. She is a Residential Fellow in Trumbull College and is a former Residential Fellow in Cendana College at Yale-NUS. She serves as a First-Year Trumbull College Advisor and an advisor to Yale-NUS VISP students. Rachel Sperling is the Librarian for Environmental Studies. She provides research support to students in the forms of consultations, course-integrated bibliographic instruction, and workshops on topics such as citation management and how to write a literature review. Meet the 2022-2023 EVST Peer Mentors!Environmental Studies Peer Mentors meet with prospective and current majors to provide advice and information regarding EVST. They can answer questions about what it’s like to major in EVST, what classes you may wish to take in the major, and how to find your concentration courses. First-year and sophomore students are encouraged to contact EVST Mentors with questions about EVST. When to contact the DUS vs. Peer Mentors?Peer mentors can be a great resource for advice about classes and various EVST research, extracurricular, or job opportunities. The DUS's can answer questions about receiving credit for a course or counting it toward the major, getting summer credits for a program, the senior essay, and other schedule-related questions. The EVST website and FAQs have a lot of program information as well. The important thing to remember is that, if you have a question and you don't know the answer, feel free to ask. Selin Goren Energy and Climate BS ’24, Timothy Dwight College | Selin is pursuing a certificate in Energy Studies, and an advanced language certificate in Spanish. She’s from Turkey and is engaged in climate advocacy in her hometown, Istanbul. She’s passionate about the green energy transition of companies and cities, youth participation in climate politics, along with the intersectionality of environmental justice. At Yale, she’s working as a content creator in the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication, the social media manager for EVST and a student research assistant for Yale Carbon Containment Lab. Selin is so happy to be a part of the EVST community! Bennett Hall Environmental Policy BA ’22.5, Timothy Dwight College | Bennett is double majoring in EVST and Economics. He is passionate about addressing financial gaps needed to fulfill a clean energy transition. Bennett has gained experience in legislative, environmental, and financial sectors through summer internships with the US House of Representatives, TerraCycle, and Partners Capital Investment Group, respectively. On campus, Bennett has served as a Captain for Yale Club Running, 4-year Captain for TD’s A Hoops team, Chief of Staff for RSAY, Project Manager for the pro-bono consulting group Yale Net Impact, and a writer for the Yale Center for Business and the Environment. Ellie Jose Biodiversity and Conservation BS ’23, Pierson College | Ellie is passionate about using developments in forest science and ecology to inform sustainable forest management, and vice versa. She has spent two summers at Yale Myers Forest conducting independent research, a place she considers to be a home away from home. Ellie is a captain of Yale Ramona, a Pierson IM Secretary, a FOOT leader, and undergraduate researcher at the YSE. Outside of Yale, Ellie competes internationally with steel bands, is a Director at Students for Gun Legislation, and is a political organizer. She is excited to continue her relationship with the EVST program and all the people in it! Ben Everett-Lane Energy & Climate BS ‘24, Berkeley College | Ben is pursuing certificates in Chinese and Statistics & Data Science with specific interests in climate science and communication. Ben currently works as a research assistant for the YPCCC and an Event Coordinator for EVST. He has previously worked as an assistant editor and co-author for YSE Professor Florencia Montagnini on her conservation book, research assistant for YCELP on their 2022 EPI report, conference planner for the IUCN, and wilderness trips leader for Overland. This summer Ben worked for WildRoots-India to help plan and run India’s first youth climate and conservation fellowship program. Bella Rosado Biodiversity and Conservation BS ’23, Berkeley College | Growing up in the Bay Area, Bella's interests in wildlife ecology and environmental justice continued at Yale, where she has studied the importance of saline lakes on migratory birds in Oregon, the impacts of climate change on traditional practices of indigenous groups in Namibia, and the changes within trophic levels in kelp forests in Santa Cruz. She’s completing her senior thesis with the Burke/Lauenroth Lab at YSE titled: The impact of mastication on the spatial distribution of soil carbon and nitrogen in a sagebrush steppe landscape. She is thrilled to be an EVST mentor this year, and she’s always happy to connect about anything environmental related! Meet the YSE 5-Year Program Graduate Liaison!Natasha Feshbach YSE MEM ’23, YC Grace Hopper BA ‘20 | As a former Yale undergrad, Natasha is a part of the MEM5 program and is specializing in People, Equity, and the Environment with a particular focus on food justice and food security. Natasha is originally from Santa Barbara, California, but spent her two gap years in Washington, DC running a direct food distribution program at the Capital Area Food Bank. As an undergrad, she was the captain of the Yale Track and Field Team, but now can be found running around East Rock and all-over New Haven with her dog, Rocky. Reach out to Natasha with questions about the YSE 5-year MEM Program. (Students apply to the YSE program at the end of the fall semester of their senior year, or in the two years immediately following graduation.) Fall'22 OpportunitiesBiodiversity & ConservationResearch at Yale Forests|The Yale Forests welcome proposals from researchers across Yale. All researchers must submit a research proposal through our online Research Application Form which will be reviewed by the School Forest Research Committee and must be approved prior to beginning any project. Before submitting an application, please contact the Research Manager (YMFResearch@yale.edu) about your intended proposal. Ucross High Plains Stewardship Initiative (UHPSI) at YSE focuses on conservation and stewardship in the American West. They will be hiring 4-5 research assistants this fall. Watch for details in next week's newsletter. Bird-Friendly Building Initiative Research Assistant Opportunity The Yale Bird-Friendly Building Initiative was launched in 2022 with the goal of accelerating the adoption of bird-friendly design on Yale’s campus and beyond. They are seeking to hire students to conduct walking surveys of specific routes on Yale’s campus during the fall migration season, looking for birds dead or injured due to collisions. These data will be used to develop an action plan for how the university can significantly reduce bird-window collisions with current and future buildings. More details for the application here. Partnership in Rangeland and Forestry Research Program at YSE | A student research assistant is needed to help create a data management system for the Partnership in Forestry and Rangeland Research Program. Duties performed by the research assistant will contribute to a partnership between YSE and on-the-ground practitioners in the West to increase knowledge and understanding of these landscapes, ecological processes, and effective land management strategies for conservation. Application details here. The Environmental Leadership & Training Initiative (ELTI) | ELTI is a capacity development program of The Forest School at YSE. ELTI trains and supports people from all sectors and backgrounds to restore and conserve tropical forest landscapes using strategies that support biodiversity and livelihoods. ELTI Fellow positions provide an inside view of what it takes to run a global training program. Yale Program on Climate Change Communication Work Opportunities| YPCCC conducts scientific research on public climate change knowledge, attitudes, policy preferences, and behavior, and the underlying psychological, cultural, and political factors that influence them. They engage the public in climate change science and solutions, in partnership with governments, media organizations, companies, and civil society, and with a daily, national radio program, Yale Climate Connections. The Clean Energy Finance Forum presents Yale Clean Energy Future podcast: a podcast series where the hosts talk to experts, unpack studies, and figure out how to create a just, equitable, and clean energy future. Climate Change Resources is a digital climate library that is referenced and cross-referenced by subject, source, and solutions. They were created to be a resource for those that research, communicate, and create change in the climate space. They're looking for interns this fall. Environmental HumanitiesThe Yale Environmental Humanities Initiative's Fall 2022 Yale Environmental Humanities guide to undergraduate and graduate course offerings is now available here. Yale offers dozens of courses each semester approaching environmental issues from diverse humanities perspectives. Some courses are entirely focused on the environment and the humanities; others approach the environmental humanities as one of several integrated themes. Yale Environmental Humanities newsletter | Students interested in exploring the intersection of environment and culture— including literature, history, anthropology, philosophy, religion, the arts, and other humanities disciplines— are encouraged to sign up for the Yale Environmental Humanities newsletter that circulates every Monday morning during the semester. During the last year, the newsletter and calendar publicized more than 140 different events across the campus. Multidisciplinary Program in Education Studies | Current Yale undergraduates apply to the Education Studies Scholars program in the fall of sophomore year, although several juniors may also be accepted as space allows. Students must have taken or be currently enrolled in Foundations in Education Studies, EDST 110. Applicants will receive notice of admission decisions before the start of spring semester.
