Bright Futures Fund launches for communities

TasNetworks has officially launched the Bright Futures Fund (BFF), marking an exciting milestone in the North West Transmission Developments (NWTD) project.

We want to hear ideas big or small, and invite communities across the North West Transmission Developments project area to explore this opportunity. Applications for the first funding round are now open and will close on 2 August 2026. You can learn more at www.tasnetworks.com.au/brightfuturesfund

The Fund was formally launched on Friday 19 June in Burnie by the Honourable Nick Duigan, Minister for Energy and Renewables alongside TasNetworks Interim CEO Renée Anderson and NWTD Project Director Richie Sheather. Over 60 people attended the launch with representatives from councils, community groups, stakeholders and partners showing their support.

Following the launch, we kept the momentum going by connecting with communities at our drop-in sessions in Sheffield, Deloraine and Longford. The weather may have been chilly, but the conversations were warm and engaging. ISP reinforces need for transmission investment to deliver lower-cost energy

The release of the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO)'s 2026 Integrated System Plan (ISP) this month reinforces the critical role transmission investment will play in delivering lower-cost, secure and reliable energy as Australia’s energy system evolves.

The report's roadmap recognises the role of transmission in supporting projected growth in electricity consumption to almost 390TWh and a fivefold increase in utility-scale wind and solar generation by 2050.

TasNetworks welcomes confirmation that Project Marinus Stage 1 has advanced to anticipated status on the Optimal Development Path, recognising the significance of the project as it moves towards construction this year.

The report also maintains Project Marinus Stage 2 as actionable, signalling the project’s ongoing role in supporting energy security and stability. 

TasNetworks Interim Chief Executive Officer Renée Anderson said the report recognises a strong year of action across Project Marinus, which is made up by the North West Transmission Developments (NWTD) and Marinus Link. 

“As we continue moving towards construction of the North West Transmission Developments, we welcome the ISP’s confirmed signalling that transmission projects are needed to deliver electricity at least cost for consumers,” says Renee.

“Transmission is and will continue to be the backbone of our energy system, helping unlock renewable energy resources and support greater resilience across the market.”
