But a new study reveals that despite spiralling household outgoings, the majority of Brits still feel it is important to invest in green energy to tackle the climate crisis. The poll by the Co-operative Bank found that 59 per cent of UK consumers want more green investment even if the Green Levy – a tax designed to subsidise low-carbon, homegrown sources of power – adds to their already painfully high energy bills. This figure rises to 63 per cent for those earning between £20,000 and £24,999 annually and even further to 69 per cent for those aged 18 to 34 years. It shows that environmentally-conscious consumers are prepared to pay the price to help tackle the climate emergency. Why sustainable investors have the upper handIt’s a hard time to be an investor. If you have a pension or ISA, watching the returns since January go negative, as global stock markets (not to mention crypto) have tanked, has been the harshest of experiences. Particularly for beginner investors and arguably even more so for those who made sustainable choices, who may now be questioning whether it was the greener nature of their investments that has been behind their demise and wondering whether they would have been better off taking a hard-nosed, profit first approach to their own money after all. It isn’t and they wouldn’t.. Becky O'Connor, co-founder of Good With Money and author of The ESG Handbook, explains why sustainable investors are in a relatively good position compared with others who may ignore the environmental and social merits of investments and focus only on the bottom line. Good With Money readers can save 25 per cent on a hardback edition of ‘The ESG Investing Handbook’ with the promo code GWM25 (offer expires December 2022).
