Welcome to York! We're thrilled you'll be joining us this semester.

Over the next three weeks, we’ll email you key information to help you prepare for life at York. Today’s email will cover the key steps you will need to complete first.

Feeling excited? Make sure to follow us on social media as we build up to your arrival:

Things you need to do

1. Download the MyUoY app

Make sure you download the MyUoY app to find quick and easy links to student essentials such as your timetable, study space bookings, digital Library card, campus map and campus outlet loyalty scheme.

On the app, we have checklists to help you work your way through key welcome tasks such as things to do first and your online induction. Scroll to checklists via the app 'essentials', select the checklist(s) most relevant to you, and work your way through our recommended steps.

You can also find the checklists on our welcome pages for new undergraduates and new postgraduates, as well as our new international students: Welcome to York Guide:

Undergraduate (UG) student checklist
Postgraduate taught (PGT) checklist
Postgraduate researcher (PGR) checklist
Additional: international student checklist

2. Check your York email address regularly

From now on, we’ll use your official University of York email address to communicate with you, rather than your personal email address. This address will use a format of letters and numbers, such as ab1234@york.ac.uk. Make sure to check in with it regularly to stay up to date!

3. Join our official welcome groups

Every year, a number of fake accounts and pages try to target new university students, and scam them into sharing information or buying fake event tickets.

If you want to chat with other new students before you arrive, follow the links below to join our only official online welcome groups - you will need to answer all the questions provided and agree to the group rules to be accepted.

Undergraduate Facebook Group
Postgraduate Facebook Group

If you don’t want to use Facebook, you’ll be able to chat with fellow college members in our private Google Classrooms released in early September. When they open, you will receive a separate email to your University email address inviting you to join them.

Your Welcome Week

Once you arrive, there will be a wide range of Welcome Week events to help you settle in. Whether you enjoy low-key socialising over a coffee or exploring the city’s nightlife, there’s something for everyone.

The only University-endorsed welcome events are those offered by our University of York Students’ Union (York SU) and our colleges. Event tickets go on sale from Tuesday 26 August 2025 via the York SU website. Please be wary of other promoters or pages claiming to provide these, and check out York SU’s top tips for spotting fake tickets.

For more information on official events and tickets, follow York SU’s official accounts below and keep an eye on your emails!

  • Week beginning 1 September - Accommodation email with your room details

  • 4 September - Manchester Airport collection service booking deadline (all students)

  • 8 September -  Postgraduate arrivals, welcome and orientation begin

  • 11 September - Academic timetable released

  • 22 September - Teaching begins

Next steps!

We look forward to seeing you soon!
