Message from the CEO

Once again, MTPConnect is organising a top-level mission to explore and secure medtech opportunities in North America for Australian companies and we hope you can join us. The trip will take in the global medtech hub of Minneapolis, Minnesota and the MedTech Conference (15 - 17 October 2024) in Toronto, Canada where will be joined by our Chair, the Hon Jaala Pulford.

This curated tour with top level meetings and networking events will help open-up new US market, commercial and collaboration opportunities for Australia’s emerging medtech start-ups and SMEs.

If the Medtech Conference hasn’t been on your radar, you need to know that it’s the world’s most prominent global medtech conference attracting 3,500 attendees from 1,500 companies across 45 countries. It’s the place to promote your innovations and meet key decision makers, investors and large medtech companies.

And to add further value for delegates we’re including a stopover in Minnesota so we can explore the amazing ‘Medical Alley’ ecosystem, a powerhouse global medtech cluster that’s home to 15,000 healthcare companies employing 500,000 people including some of the world’s biggest device companies. In Minneapolis, our visit program will include Medtronic, the University of Minnesota’s Visible Heart Lab and Bakken Medical Device Center and the Mayo Clinic and their innovation exchange. There’ll also be networking with the Minnesota healthcare and healthtech community hosted with our MoU partner, the Medical Alley Association.

Delegates should arrive in Minneapolis on 9 October for this two-day program (10-11 October 2024) before heading to Toronto where we are helping promote Australian companies at the Australian Pavilion at the MedTech Conference. Secure a place on the delegation by completing registration by 12 August 2024, in time to also secure the early bird Conference rate.

If you couldn’t get to the BIO convention in San Diego in June, we captured some fascinating interviews for the MTPConnect Podcast and this week we released the next episode in the BIO Bites series. Check out the new episode which features BIO’s President and CEO John F. Crowley, Industry and Science Minister Hon Ed Husic and insights from companies and innovators at the Australian Pavilion and on our site visit program.

During the month we also featured a new podcast episode about the launch of a groundbreaking virtual emergency department diabetes service by the Australian Centre for Accelerating Diabetes Innovations (ACADI), a TTRA research centre.

I’d also like to recognise the incredible milestone made during the month with BiVACOR announcing the successful first in human implantation of its Total Artificial Heart (TAH) as part of an Early Feasibility Study with the Texas Heart Institute in Houston. BiVACOR was founded in Brisbane by biomedical engineer Daniel Timms, PhD, who invented the TAH after a member of his family battled end-stage heart failure. MTPConnect has been supporting the development of BiVACOR’s innovation since October 2022 through our cardiovascular disease and diabetes accelerator, TTRA.  Our medtech conference delegation last year visited with Daniel and his team at their Huntington Beach facility and I was delighted to catch up with him in San Diego last month at the big Australian networking reception at BIO.

This month we welcomed additional funding from the WA government for the WA Life Sciences Innovation Hub (WALSIH) to expand its services supporting local innovators. And we welcomed Dr Roop Judge as Head of Commercialisation WA who is working with Dr Tracey Wilkinson and our team in Perth to promote and facilitate MTPConnect’s program of activities in WA through the Hub.

With so much happening in the sector, we hope you continue to enjoy our newsletter and stay connected to opportunities, events, and news.

Kind regards,

Stuart Dignam
Chief Executive Officer

    Case Study Showcase

Case Study Showcase | Future Health Today and Torch Recruit – Changing The Course Of Chronic Disease

In Australia, accessing primary healthcare through general practitioners (GPs) is a cornerstone of the healthcare system. With more than four in five Australians visiting their GP annually and two million attending weekly, general practice serves as the frontline for managing various health conditions. Among these conditions, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease affect a significant portion of the population, highlighting the pressing need for optimised care delivery strategies. To address the existing gaps in chronic disease management and clinical trial recruitment, a team of University of Melbourne researchers, led by Associate Professor Jo-Anne Manski-Nankervis, initiated an innovative project, which was awarded funding through the inaugural round of the Targeted Translation Research Accelerator (TTRA). The team developed software employing algorithms to analyse electronic medical records in general practices, aiming to improve clinical care and expedite clinical trials. This software introduced two distinct platforms: Future Health Today (FHT) for enhancing clinical care and Torch Recruit for streamlining clinical trial recruitment. Both platforms aim to integrate the latest innovations into general practice, addressing chronic disease management at the frontline.  Find out more...
