In the meantime we’ve been busy getting some important information gathered and a special offer to get you started. Going ContinentalA few of us have ventured out testing and entering the first race meetings of the season. Roy Chapman volunteered to put the Continental 3CR tyres to a real-rider test on his TZ350 and we are pleased to report all is well. Roy is an experienced rider who has raced two-strokes at National level, he is a consistent front runner in our Masters Championship and can be found amongst the top 10 overall. Of course, we cannot conduct a ‘professional’ tyre test across all variables but this is a good gauge for most of us throughout our field of ability. Roy’s first experience of the Continentals was a wet, cold February track day at Donington Park. He proceeded with the necessary caution for the initial session but was pleasantly surprised not to have experienced any slides or unexpected twitches! (feel free to make your own gags here). We monitored track and tyre temperatures throughout the day and the tarmac was initially a lowly 6° with the first three sessions on a properly wet track. Roy quickly picked up the pace, confidence building every session. He improved by 2-3 seconds every time out, riding until the end of each session. Booked in the middle group on the period, two-stroke, his fellow riders were mostly NG and Bemsee racers on middle weight bikes including several MZs. There were a mix of tyres including many on full wets. Using his own ability, plus his growing confidence in the Continentals, he was comfortably one of the quickest in his group. Race paceNext stop was NG Road Racing’s opening round at Oulton Park. Roy, Darrell and Nick all entered their 350s in the ACU250/GP Cup race agains the slicks/wets shod modern machines. Roy continued with the Continentals and delivered a faultless day, finishing on the podium in the Cup class – 11th of 29 finishers in race one. For their races the track was dry but it was very cold and rather windy. His best lap time was 1:57.355 which is a 0.6 improvement over his best race time in June last year when on the Avon Tyre. The verdictThe verdict is that the Continental Tyre is very stable, it is capable in both wet and dry conditions including cold weather. The chatter many have experienced is improved considerably with the radial construction. The performance compared to the Avon will be proven throughout the season when we are all racing together. Naturally, the onus is on you to adapt to a change of tyre safely.
