Message from the CEO

Diving into 2025, MTPConnect’s team is working on several exciting initiatives and opportunities to help drive Australian life science innovations and support start-ups and SMEs.

We are continuing to advocate for increased action on antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and a stronger policy response from the Australian Government. As co chair, with Andrew Bowskill, of the Australian Antimicrobial Resistance Network (AAMRNet), I am pleased that we have been able to put forward another pre-budget submission to the Australian government outlining a $135 million four-year action plan to help protect Australia and our Pacific neighbours from the escalating pandemic of AMR. This involves establishing an AMR-focused accelerator in Australia and investing in a pilot subscription fund for new antimicrobials.

We have also been busy with AusBiotech preparing a joint pre-budget submission for the 2025-26 Budget, calling for investment for strategic initiatives to grow our life sciences sector – more on that next week.

And for those looking to make plans for the year, we have developed a program of international conference delegations, site visits and activities for 2025 to help you and your company access international markets and global supply chains. The idea is to put you in front of international customers, investors and partners.

If you are planning to attend BIO in Boston this year, save the date for the MTPConnect Top Level BIO2025 Visit Program from 12- 13 June 2025. Registrations will open in March and places are limited so get in early.

Then mark your diary for The MedTech Conference in San Diego in early October. We are creating a valuable two-day site visit program for medtech startups and SMES, on 2 -3 October 2025, so plan to be in San Diego early for this. Register your interest in joining this next level medtech delegation!

As podcasts continue to grow in popularity as a source of news and entertainment, we are delighted to launch the Season 7 of the MTPConnect Podcast. We have big plans to bring you guests from around Australia and beyond who are behind some of the life-saving innovations and new medical products making headlines. In case you missed it, check out our chat with the inspirational Dr Daniel Timms on creating the first successful total artificial heart.

Look out for a new podcast episode coming with leading stroke and cardiovascular experts Professor Geoff Donnan and Professor Jason Kovacic on some of the innovations being developed through the Australian Stroke and Heart Research Accelerator’s (ASHRA) transformational research portfolio (made possible through our TTRA program, a Medical Research Future Fund initiative).

There are also a number of events coming up in February to take part in. In Perth, join us for an evening with Dr Shirley Bowen, WA Health Director General, for the year’s first WA MTP Sector Spotlight on 26 February. Our first SA Insight Series event for 2025 kicks off on 27 February with ‘Unleashed: SA’s health investment champions share inside scoop’ where South Australia's top investment champions will reveal the secrets to transforming medical innovations – don’t miss it.

In other news, we are delighted to welcome Louise Moloney on board as Events Manager, based in our Melbourne office.

We hope you continue to enjoy our regular newsletter and stay connected to opportunities, events and more.

Kind regards,

Stuart Dignam
Chief Executive Officer
