Week of Prayer for Peace in the Middle EastPresident of the Uniting Church in Australia Rev Charissa Suli has called the Uniting Church to a week of prayer, inviting every congregation, agency, faith community, school, family, and member within the Uniting Church to a Week of Prayer for Peace in the Middle East from 29 September - 5 October. The call came after Israel launched hundreds of airstrikes in southern and eastern Lebanon last week, in an eruption of what have been simmering cross-border tensions between Israel and Hezbollah. In a pastoral statement, the President lamented the escalation of violence in the region and urged the Uniting Church to stand in prayer and solidarity with the people of the Middle East and with diaspora communities. Daily prayer starters will be posted daily on our Facebook page and can be found on the Assembly website.
Worship Resource for Older Persons Sunday 2024A worship resource is now available for Uniting Church communities to mark the third UCA Older Persons Sunday this October. Older Persons Sunday is an annual opportunity to celebrate the human rights and contributions of older people in our communities, challenge ageism and reflect on how we can nurture dignity and hope for all ages. The suggested date is the first Sunday in October, which follows the United Nations’ International Day of Older Persons, 1 October, however congregations can mark the occasion on another Sunday in October or another date that suits them.

In this article by Kerry Povey you can read more about the work of the Black Pearl Network both here and in Papua, where they see the impact of education in action. Education is the way out of poverty for many of our Papuan friends and opens doors to employment in areas of influence in their country, and communication with others outside.
