Act of Remembrance
This week, The High School commemorated all those who died in conflict during the twentieth century in an Act of Remembrance. In particular, the service of at least 476 past pupils who volunteered during the First World War and Second World War (of whom a total of 99 were killed) was marked in a short ceremony at the War Memorial. You can learn more about past pupils of The High School who died during the First World War here. Geography Lecture
This week pupils studying Geography participated in a live MS Teams talk with past pupil Ellen Cunningham (HSD, 2006-12). Ellen is an environmental economist currently undertaking her PhD research with Glasgow University on the economic impact of water insecurity on households in Sudan. Alongside her PhD she works as a consultant with local NGOs and UN agencies supporting them to more accurately evaluate the impact of water-related programs. Before moving to Sudan Ellen worked as an environmental economist in the private sector analyzing the costs, benefits, and socio-economic impact of environmental policy for the UK Government, European Commission, and the Government of the British Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. She studied Earth Sciences at Trinity College, Dublin
and has an MSc in Environmental Economics and Sustainable Development from the University of St Andrews. We should like to thank Ellen for taking the time to share her expertise and experience with our current pupils. Senior Hockey WinOn Wednesday 10 November the Senior 1 girls began their Cup campaign with a victory against Rathdown School. The day was highly anticipated and we couldn’t wait to get on the pitch! We succeeded in getting our supporters hearts racing as we had multiple chances especially in the last quarter. We were unlucky not to score during the match despite great attempts by Coco O’Donnell, Katie Hopkins, and Rebecca Collins. The final whistle blew and the match ended as a 0-0 draw. Sarah Smyth stepped up ahead of her own junior cup match and our five 1 v 1 takers - Ella Pasley, Katie Dunne, Zoe Dunne, Sophie Doyle, and Ella Maxwell - rose to the challenge and scored 4 out of 5 penalties. It was all down to to the last 1v1 and Sarah had to save it to send us into the
second round of the cup. She showed brilliant composure by pushing the opposition player wide and securing a well-deserved win for the senior girls. Thank you to all our supporters: see you in the second round! A Thought for AutumnYou cannot hold beauty in your hands

SCT League WinOn Wednesday the Senior Cup Team played our first league game of the season against St Patrick's Classical School. It was a tough encounter but The High School emerged with a decisive win 25-14. The lads gave everything they had and more so we are proud of the result. What a great way to start the competition. We are looking forward to the next match in the coming weeks. Form 6 Geography Field Trip
All pupils studying Leaving Certificate Geography must complete a fieldwork study. This year we set out to examine the impact that the processes of transportation and deposition have had on shaping the coastal landscape. We chose Shankill Beach to test our hypothesis as it offered an ideal site to carry out our chosen experiments. The weather was dry and clear ideal conditions for fieldwork. We learned and honed our geographical skills. It was a worthwhile and enjoyable day and we left with excellent results to examine and write up!
Forms 1 and 2 Rugby Success
Pupils from Forms 1 and 2 enjoyed a tag rugby blitz on Wednesday 3 November that was held at Seapoint Rugby Club. A total of 16 schools attended the blitz some of whom entered more than one team. We had a terriffic day of sport with all our teams winning all of their matches. We had a wonderful day but it was especially thrilling to return to The High School undefeated. We can't wait to wear The High School colours again as we continue in rugby competitions throughout the year.
Form 4 Cinema VisitOn Monday pupils from Form 4 visited the Light House Cinema to see a showing of the new Irish language film Arracht which tells the story of Colmán Sharkey, a fisherman, a father, and husband, living on the wild shores of Connemara in 1845 as The Great Hunger descends.
In Science we have been thinking about how the sun, moon, and Earth interact. We worked together to create projects to explore this beginning with group discussions and diagrams. They all turned out well and we had a fun lesson listening to other people explaining how their projects worked. Celebrating Diwali
Form 2 pupils learned about the Hindu festival of Diwali last week. A festival of light, it is an important time for Hindus worldwide. Diwali symbolises victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. Learning all about world religions and festivals is a big part of Religious Education at Junior Cycle.
HSD Parents' Association
Many thanks to The High School Parents' Association who have given a generous donation to the Senior Drama cast and crew this year by sponsoring the traditional, production hoodies. We are delighted that the HSD PA has decided to support the Arts at The High School in this way. Dates for your Diary
