KL2 PROFILE SERIES: BLAKE LANGLEY, ND, LAc This year, we begin a new profile series to shed light on some of the distinguished scholars currently participating in our KL2 Program. We begin with Blake Langley, ND, LAc., who is clinically trained as a naturopathic physician and acupuncturist. Dr. Langley is currently a staff scientist at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in the department of Cancer Prevention, Division of Public Health Sciences, as well as an ITHS KL2 scholar who joined the program in 2023. ITHS entered into his
translational science journey very recently, offering support that help changed his career trajectory in an exciting way. He spoke to ITHS about his focus on integrative oncology and more. Read more here>>
SCIENTIFIC SUCCESS COMMITTEE
SIHI-REACH Leaders, Drs. Erica Woodahl & Karen Brown – Photo from U Montana
The National Institutes of Health (NIH) has chosen the University of Montana’s L.S. Skaggs Institute of Health Innovation as the new Pacific Northwest location for one of five entrepreneurial hubs across the United States. Dubbed SIHI-REACH, this hub will support academic innovators across the WWAMI region in Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana, and Idaho. The University of Washington’s WE-REACH is pleased to partner with this new, NIH-funded, national
REACH hub.
In the last 4 years, WE-REACH has provided training and project funding to early-stage academic teams aiming to take their innovations from the university to commercialized products. In that time, Terri Butler, PhD, has led the WE-REACH Biomedical Innovation Training Program that engaged over 400 students and faculty members from around the Pacific Northwest and laid the groundwork for many innovation teams to win competitions, gap funds, and gain investor buy-in.
Now, ITHS is proud to say that Terri will continue to run a similar training series for this audience under the ITHS Technology Development Center umbrella. Thank you to Terri for all the great work under WE-REACH - and we look forward to your continued success with ITHS! Stay connected:

TRANSLATIONAL SCIENCE IN THE NEWS
CANCER VACCINE INSTITUTE FEATURED ON THE TODAY SHOW Congratulations to the Cancer Vaccine Institute (CVI) team for being featured on the Today Show! Aired on January 30th, this inspiring piece follows a longtime NBC reporter, her fight with breast cancer, and her choice to leave journalism to support the accelerating push for a breast cancer vaccine. Part of her inspiration to do so is the work of ITHS-founder Dr. Nora Disis , who is featured in this piece, along with the exciting work she's doing now: Disis and her team are now
working on STEMVAC, a vaccine candidate created to target cancer stem cells that aren’t reached by chemotherapy or radiation. Researchers hope it could be used for different types of breast cancer. It’s already in phase 2 trials.
The ITHS offers Catalyst Awards to provide “just-in-time” resources especially to early career investigators looking to complete a project or collect pilot data for a larger grant
application. The ITHS also offers Voucher Awards as “in-kind” service vouchers in support of outstanding translational research. 2024 deadlines for the Catalyst and Voucher awards: - April 1, 2024
- July 1, 2024
- October 1, 2024
The Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) was founded to bridge the gap between discovery and public benefit by supercharging development though significant financial and management support. With the advent
of UW's ARPA-H Committee last year, WWAMI investigators need to know about this high-impact funding opportunity. Read more from our guest author, TL1 trainee Isabella Jennings.
