Advancing the North West Transmission Developments in 2026: Project Director’s Update

As we begin 2026, NWTD is preparing to move into the construction phase - a major milestone for the project and for Tasmania’s energy future.

You’ll see activity increase across the north-west as mobilisation works progress. Throughout this period, our focus remains on working collaboratively with landholders, community and stakeholders.

Over the coming weeks, TasNetworks will be advertising over 20 new positions to support the delivery of NWTD. These roles will help strengthen our project team and ensure we have the capability needed as activity increases across the region. Keep an eye on the TasNetworks Careers page for current vacancies.

February will mark a key step in our Community Benefits Sharing Program, with recruitment commencing for the Independent Assessment Panel. Their involvement will help ensure local voices guide how funding is directed. Stay tuned for a special announcement and more information in mid-February.

Thank you for your continued engagement and support. As we enter this important chapter, we look forward to sharing our progress and continuing to work together to deliver long-term benefits for Tasmania.

Community Engagement Report now available

Our latest NWTD Engagement Report outlines the activities carried out between July and December 2025, including community events, stakeholder meetings, workshops and webinars.

From engaging on construction costs for NWTD to chatting to community at the Tasmanian Craft Fair to seeking insights on how the Community Benefits Sharing program could be best implemented, we’ve been listening to what matters most to the community.

Championing Community Voices

TasNetworks is pleased to announce the appointment of Alexander McKenzie as the Independent Chair for the Community Benefits Sharing Program.

Alex was selected following a competitive recruitment process, in which he stood out for his leadership experience and connection to the north-west coast. Alex brings valuable insight into the aspirations and challenges of local communities, including residents with diverse needs across the region.

"As someone who was born, raised, and now lives and works on the north-west coast, I am energised by the thought of continuing to contribute to the strategic future of the north-west, and in that, the future of Tasmania." - Alexander McKenzie

Alex’s community and governance experience includes:

  • RACT Group Director (2023 – present)
  • TasCOSS Board Member (2017 – 2020) and President (2020 – 2025)
  • Tasmanian Community Fund Board Member (2019 – 2025)
  • 10 Days on the Island Deputy Chair and Chair (2019 – 2021)

As Chair, Alex will lead the program’s Independent Assessment Panel, which will play a central role in ensuring community benefit funding is allocated transparently and in line with community priorities.
