HEADLINE NEWSLifestyle Medicine: a modern medical discipline full of optimismRecently the British Journal of Nursing published a piece on the growing optimism surrounding lifestyle medicine. This piece was put together by Dr Ellen Fallows (BSLM Vice-President), alongside Dr Alex Maxwell (BSLM President) and Dr Rob Lawson (BSLM Chair). It is great to celebrate the role of nursing in Lifestyle Medicine. Patients often expect to have conversations around non-drug options with nurses who can sometimes have longer appointments and better quality relationships with their patients than doctors. The full piece is available through the BJN here. If you do not have access, you can find an earlier edition of the article on the BSLM website through the link below. LIFESTYLE MEDICINE IN FOCUSUK GPs among the 'most stressed' and 'least satisfied'We are saddened to read this report about our general practice colleagues. Physician health is a core part of lifestyle medicine and evidence has shown that it is critical for safe and good quality patient care. As with lifestyle medicine approaches for patients, we cannot look after our health if the environment in which we live and work makes this impossible to do. We hope that this report is a call to action to support primary care teams to be able to live and work at their best. LATEST NEWS AT BSLMBSLM 2023 | Featured Abstracts for April For our featured abstracts this month, we are looking at two great submissions by Dr Anita Teli and Sana Sadiq. Anita: "Obesity has become a major global problem leading to diabetes, hypertension, and metabolic syndrome. Students studying medicine are said to be under a lot of time pressure because they must devote a lot of their waking hours to attending hospital posts, practical lessons, and theory lectures...I am submitting this study to BSLM 2023 to present my findings and create awareness about the disease burden of medical students among lifestyle medicine physicians." Sana: "Being the first pandemic of its kind, not enough research had been done on the effect of the COVID-19 lockdown on the mental health of parents and children. I began my modest research keeping this in mind, and I can't wait to share it with my contemporary academics and receive their expert feedback." We're looking forward to see all the other submissions ahead of BSLM 2023! Who will be speaking at BSLM 2023?It is time to start taking a look at the speakers that will be present at #BSLM2023! NHS NETWORKSConflict in general practice: Why is it on the rise? Conflict is all around us; it's a normal part of our interaction with other human beings, and many would argue that without constructive handling of conflict, individuals, teams and organisations cannot improve, innovate nor fulfil their true potential. Life after stroke – what do people need and what’s the role of primary care? As stroke survival improves, longer term care becomes increasingly important.
