EVST News January 13, 2024 Welcome back to Campus! New Course HighlightsE&EB 212 Data Science in Ecology and Conservation is a seminar-style course. It is currently under review for QR designation (which should be in place before semester start) and is taught by Walter Jetz, director Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and of Environment Studies at YSE and director of the Yale Center for Biodiversity and Global Change. CSYC 224 Approaches to Sustainable Food and Agriculture considers the multiple roots and possible futures of organic farming, local food, urban agriculture, controlled environment agriculture, and related concepts, contestations, trends, and fads. The course includes three required Friday afternoon working visits to the Yale Farm at the end of the semester, which will ground discussions in hands-on work in the soil and is taught by Mark Bomford, Director of the Yale Sustainable Food Program. EVST 300 Canada's Response to Global Environmental Wicked Problems is a seminar that surveys Canada’s responses to eleven Global Environmental Wicked Problems that have emerged into the public consciousness and discourses over the last ten to fifteen years. The course is taught by Dawn Bazely, a University Professor in the Department of Biology, Faculty of Science, at York University who is this year’s recipient of the Yale Fulbright Canada Distinguished Visiting Professorship. Fox International Fellowship: Info Session | Friday, January 17 12pm - 1pm | Provides research fellowships through exchanges with renown universities around the world. Attend an information session to learn more about the fellowship and available research opportunities. The fellowship supports one academic year of independent research projects. The objective of the Fox International Fellowship Program is to identify and help develop potential world-class statesmen and women who may participate in guiding the world toward a peaceful order in the 21st century. Conversation With Dan Gross - career paths in clean energy and climatetech | Tuesday, January 21 11:45am - 12:45pm, Evans Hall, School of Management room 2400 | Dan Gross, instructor of Yale’s Renewable Energy Project Finance course and Director of Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund, will host a conversation about career paths in clean energy and climatetech. The conversation will focus on advice for skills in demand, thoughts on the impact of the incoming administration and how the climatetech and clean energy sectors can reinvent themselves in response, and of course a lot of time for Q&A. Register here. 2025 Common Good & Creative Careers Networking Event | Friday, February 21, 1pm - 3pm | This in-person networking event is a great way for organizations to engage with Yale talent. The event is being held at the Golden Center at St. Thomas More Catholic Church & Center at Yale at 268 Park Street in New Haven. The event set-up is similar to a career fair, but smaller in scale, offering more opportunity to network with Yale students. Participating organizations will be offering opportunities for students to learn about their work in: education, nonprofit, government, energy and the environment, think tanks, the arts, entertainment, publishing, journalism and more. Spring OpportunitiesThe Yale Center for Environmental Law and Policy is hiring 8-10 Research Assistants for the Spring 2025 semester | Application and further details are available on the Yale student employment portal | RAs will actively research a wide range of sustainability issues and topics, support the broad priorities of the Center, and support the time sensitive project needs of the Director and project leaders. This can include providing editorial support, preparing presentations or research reports, and providing policy analyses or data assessments across several of our projects, including the Environmental Performance Index (EPI), Global Commons Stewardship Index (GCSI), Yale Initiative on Sustainable Finance (YISF), or Remaking the Global Trading System for a Sustainable Future Project (RTP). Start dates for the position will be on a rolling basis per the candidate’s availability, with the expectation that all Research Assistants will be working by January 21st. Research Assistants are expected to work 10-12 hours/week, including mostly remote work and some occasion for in-person presence. Public Humanities Grant Program | Offers small grants of $250–3,000 for public humanities projects broadly related to the environment. Read news items about some past grant projects here. Summer OpportunitiesYale Summer Internships and FellowshipsFor over 20 years, the Summer Environmental Fellowship has funded hundreds of Yale students interested in learning about environmental issues. Summer Environmental Fellowship (SEF) and Climate Technologies Fellowship| Rising sophomores through rising seniors interested in learning about environmental issues are eligible to apply. EVST juniors are especially encouraged to apply for the SEF to support summer senior essay research. A wide variety of summer plans qualify for the SEF, as long as they provide students with an environmental research or training opportunity. The Summer Climate Technologies Fellowship is available to all Yale College undergraduates interested in technologies related to climate change. Apply by March 14th. Alaska Conservation Foundation provides a grant to each host organization to cover an intern stipend of $7,000 and reimburse intern travel costs to and from Alaska up to $1,200 for those with intern positions outside Anchorage, $1,000 for those in Anchorage. Apply by February 12th. Environmental Law Institute 2025 Research & Policy Intern | ELI is hiring interns to support the research and publications departments of the Institute. Interns work directly with staff attorneys, editors, scientists, and policy analysts on a variety of projects. Substantive areas of focus in local, regional, federal, and international policy and law include: climate change, green technology, land use, biodiversity, air quality, public health, hazardous waste and brownfields, wetlands and watersheds, armed conflict and the environment, environmental management systems, public participation, environmental justice, Indigenous issues, and environmental enforcement. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship | Provides a scholarship award (up to a maximum of $9,500) for two academic years of full-time study and a 10-week, full-time internship ($700/week) during the summer at a NOAA or partner facility. The internship is conducted between the first and second years of the award, and provides "hands-on" multidisciplinary educational training experience involving student scholars in NOAA-related science, research, technology, policy, management, and education activities. Awards also include a mandatory NOAA orientation during the last week of May in the first year of the scholarship award; a housing allowance ($400/week) for student scholars who do not reside at home during the summer internship; round-trip travel to the internship site including reimbursement for incidentals; travel expenses for attendance and participation at the NOAA Science and Education Symposium (Final Week presentations) in Silver Spring, Maryland, at the completion of the internship; and conference travel to attend up to two professional conferences and present the results of the NOAA internship project. UC San Diego/Scripps Institute of Oceanography MPL SUMMER INTERNSHIP PROGRAM | The Marine Physical Laboratory (MPL) at world-renowned Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UC San Diego Summer Internship program is a paid ten-week research program where students complete their own individual research project under the mentorship of some of the most notable scientists in the world. Students attend weekly seminars, participate in hands-on activities, and more.
