Vinnie Murray Cup Semi Final

The High School Senior Cup Team played two very successful games in the same number of weeks at Donnybrook Stadium defeating St Andrew's College and Presentation Bray,  24-18 and 22-13, respectively.  This success means that The High School will play Catholic University School in the semi-final of the Vinnie Murray Cup at Donnybrook Stadium on Tuesday 23 January at 3.30 pm.  Tickets to enter the stadium can be purchased from Leinster Rugby here.  The High School will be providing a bus to and from the game for pupils.  Tickets for the bus will be on sale outside The Reynolds Hall at lunch times.  They will cost €3 each.  We wish all members of the squad every success in the competition. 

Young Scientist Exhibition

Last week on Friday 12 January 2024 all Form 1 pupils attended the Young Scientist Exhibition. The atmosphere was amazing: everyone was enthusiastic and excited.  It was the 60th anniversary of the competition and there were approximately 500 projects by 219 schools at the RDS that were judged by 85 experts.  There were numerous diverse projects, ranging from exploring the health benefits of sea swimming to examining the detrimental effects of vaping.  Three High School pupils entered the competition, but the winner this year was Seán O'Sullivan from Limerick.  His project, called "Verify Me," can detect whether a text was written by a human or generated by AI.

Fr Godfrey Cup

Despite the cold temperature, many happy High School pupils travelled to Terenure Rugby Football Club to watch the HSD Junior Cup Team take on St Gerard's School in the quarter final of the Father Godfrey Cup.  Spirits were high and the team worked well together.  Despite numerous opportunities to strike back, none came to fruition.  The excitement never waned and we were hopeful until the end but this time the odds were not in our favour.  Thanks are due to the determined troop of devoted supporters who came out in all weathers to bolster the team.  It was a great pleasure to watch the squad play throughout the season and we look forward to seeing their continued development as they move forward. 

Form 5 Agricultural Science

Last week, a group of pupils from Form 5 who are currently studying Agricultural Science had the opportunity to be featured in The Farmer's Journal.  The photograph was taken of them reading a recent issue of the publication, grouped proudly next to The High School's raised vegetable beds.

Form 2 Basketball Success

Congratulations to the Form 2 basketball team on their victory over Wesley College in a thrilling head-to-head match that took place this week.  The High School team emerged triumphant with a final score of 31-26.  The game was filled with excitement and intense competition as both teams fought hard for every point.  However, it was The High School's impressive performance that secured them this well-deserved win.  We wish them continued success in all their future endeavours on the court.

Form 1 Table Tennis

On Monday afternoon there was a very intense match between The High School and St Colmcille's Community School in an epic game of table tennis. Unfortunately, The High School lost to our opponents with a score of 4-2.  We are the first girls' team to represent The High School since 2018!

Form 2 Science

In Form 2 Science, pupils embarked on a creative project: they ingeniously crafted models depicting the different phases of the moon.  However, what made their approach truly unique was their choice of materials - Oreo biscuits!  With great excitement they transformed these sweet treats into accurate representations of the moon's various stages.  The classroom buzzed with creativity as they shaped their biscuit models to showcase concepts like waxing crescent, first quarter, full moon, third quarter, and waning crescent.  This hands-on activity not only allowed them to explore lunar phases in a fun and engaging way but also encouraged teamwork and critical thinking skills.

Art Visit

Art Portfolio were delighted to welcome past pupil Adam Maguire (HSD, 2014-20) to talk about his art works since leaving school.  Adam talked through his portfolio process, his love of keeping a notebook, and the importance of drawing in his everyday life.  He has spent time in the National College of Art and Design  and in Florence learning classical drawing techniques.  He is a dedicated draughtsman and his drawing is fluid and expressive.  We were all inspired by his portfolio of work and it is a testament to how creativity can motivate us in all areas of our life.

Leinster Rugby Excursion

Last Saturday, The High School rugby girls, both junior and senior, went to watch Leinster play against Stade Francaise at the Aviva Stadium.  It was a brilliant game to watch as Leinster scored 47 points and gave us much to celebrate.  Everyone had a great time watching and learning about the sport. It was wonderful to see young and older girls' rugby teams coming together and having fun.
