Vol 28 No 04 23 Sept 2022
National Ploughing ChampionshipsOn 20 September senior pupils studying Geology and Home Economics attended the opening day of the National Ploughing Championships. The bus left early in the morning and we spent the day wandering the many rows of stalls there. For some of us it was our first time at the largest outdoor event in the country. It is safe to say there was something for everyone: from bread baking to innovation arenas. There was a local enterprise village exhibiting the produce of local farmers. There were also many government tents devoted to sustainable living, housing, and culture. The pupils who study Geology visited the Geological Survey Ireland stall where we had the opportunity to talk to people working in the areas that we study. There was a scavenger list of suggested stalls that we used to guide
ourselves around the grounds, collecting lots of great merchandise along the way, ranging from tote bags to compost bins. Thankfully the sun was shining too which added to our enjoyment and made for a great school outing.
Form 6 Biology Field Trip
As part of the Ecology section of our curriculum Form 6 pupils studying Biology were tasked with conducting a comprehensive study of an ecosystem. Specifically, we were to survey a rocky seashore habitat. On the craggy granite coast of Sandycove we were free to roam wherever our quadrats and clipboards led us. Every tidepool seemed a miniature underwater world of its own, bursting with life, from blooming anemones to winding polychaete worms. Surprisingly, crabs proved the most elusive of all the seashore’s inhabitants, but in the final minutes of the trip, our patience was rewarded: after heaving a boulder off the ground, we revealed a gargantuan leviathan!
Journal Cover Design Winner
The annual competition to design the front cover of the school journal once again attracted some wonderful works of art from our pupils. This year’s winner was Lauren Collins who has won a prize of €100. Keep an eye out for details of next year’s journal cover competition. Student Council ElectionsCongratulations to the following pupils who were successful at the recent Student Council elections. Pupils studying SPHE in Form 1 recently completed colourful posters based on the momentous time of change they are currently experiencing, having moved from primary to secondary school. Well done, everyone.
Form 1 RugbyLast week pupils in Form 1 enjoyed their first rugby matches and training sessions at The High School. We wish our pupils every success in the coming years as they progress in the game.
New Uniform
Last year The High School Student Council and Uniform Co-ordinator, Ms Packham, consulted with the school community regarding the addition of new items to the uniform list. The result is that now there are two new trouser options for pupils with sizing choices and styles that are more inclusive of different body shapes. Crested jumpers are now available in three warmth levels and there is a new black zip-up fleece as well as a light rain jacket which can be initialled on request.
Form 1 Geography
In Geography class we had to write a diary entry about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. We had to pretend we were living in 79 AD. We drew pictures of the eruption, imagining what it must have been like to see Vesuvius explode and to helplessly look on as rock and molten lava poured down the mountain side. It was really enjoyable!
