No images? Click here There’s less than two weeks to go until your academic year begins! It’s time to talk about what your college has to offer and what happens during your welcome week. Local and commuting students We are contacting you as a new local and commuting Fresher joining our College this year (if this is not correct and you have accommodation on campus, please let us know!). We understand that coming to university can sometimes feel a little bit daunting, but your college team is here for you every step of the way, whether you are living on or off campus. We have organised an online induction in advance of your arrival, and a welcome event so that you have an opportunity to meet the college team and have a tour of the college facilities (more details below). Don’t forget to take a look at our website and join our official Facebook and Instagram pages to keep up to date with college events. Online inductionCompleting the online induction is a great place to start your university journey. York prides itself on being a community built on respect, and this induction explains more about the community you will be joining and our values. It is packed with useful information and resources to support you through your first few weeks. Pre-arrival surveyWe are keen to hear from you. Please complete our pre-arrival survey and share with us your interests and ambitions or feel free to ask a question. College Music SchemeCollege Music is a great way to support your wellbeing, learn skills, make friends and have fun: from workshops to jam sessions, joining a choir or borrowing an instrument, recording an album or starting a band, coming to an open mic or listening to Vanbrugh Jazz, or just using our facilities to practice. There is something for everyone, regardless of what college you are in or what subject you are studying. Find out more and sign up for free to receive invites to events and activities across all the colleges. Find out more about college sport membership and how to join below.College events and activitiesDuring welcome week, there is a packed schedule of events and activities you are welcome to get involved with, where you’ll meet new people and make the most of your new community. To make sure that you’ve got access to all our fantastic events, you can purchase your Freshers Week ticket below.Remember: A number of fake pages and social media accounts attempt to target incoming students each year. Please be aware that the only University-endorsed events are those offered on our website and by our Student Unions (YUSU and GSA). All colleges host regular events and activities for students to get involved, try new things and meet new people. Whether it’s weekly art events, board game nights, coffee events, Waffle Wednesday, Monday Quiz nights or termly field trips - there’s something for everyone. These activities are often hosted by our College Life Advisors, our student leaders or even by our enterprising Freshers! Keep an eye on your college newsletter for opportunities and invitations to events and activities, or get in touch with your college team if you want to run your own. I work closely with the College team and the committee to try to make your experience in James as welcoming and positive as possible. I also attend meetings with the University and Student Union to ensure that your voices are being fairly heard, and give student perspectives on challenges the University faces. I'm looking forward to seeing you all this year, and I hope you enjoy Freshers Week as much as you can!” David Ward (Chair of the James JCRC) College HandbookIn addition to our emails, your college team has curated a handy reference guide for key contacts and college information you may need during your time in college.
