Good afternoon, The team at MTPConnect is delighted to have been selected as an Industry Partner Organisation to support start-ups and small to medium enterprises under the Australian Government’s Industry Growth Program. We’re looking forward to delivering more of our sought-after services and advisory support for start-ups and SMEs wanting to scale in Australia and build the life science
commercialisation ecosystem. Part of our efforts to support life science companies to grow and scale includes improving access to global supply chains and strategic international markets. So, this newsletter comes to you from San Diego, California where MTPConnect is leading the Team Australia delegation at the BIO International Convention, the largest biotechnology business partnering event in the world. It’s all about showcasing Australia’s outstanding life science innovations, innovators and unique biotechnology, pharmaceutical, clinical trials and biomanufacturing capabilities. Our thanks to the state governments of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia, the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, CSIRO and AusBiotech for your strong support in making BIO2024 the best ever. To make the most of the BIO opportunity, we’ve just kicked off our visit program with a group of 50 delegates from the sector. We spent this afternoon at J&J Innovation’s JLABS in La Jolla enjoying a site visit and tour of their flagship co-working biotech lab space, while learning about
their BLUEKNIGHT collaboration with the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) focused on medical countermeasures. Tomorrow will involve time with Novartis, a visit to DNA sequencing company Illumina to learn about their global activities and tour their flow
cell manufacturing facilities and connecting with Truvian Sciences, a start-up developing a POC blood testing diagnostic working with Australia’s Planet Innovation. Along the way we’ll all connect with members of the San Diego Entrepreneurs Exchange, hold an Australia-US Life Sciences Workforce Capability roundtable featuring experts from CSL, Thermo Fisher Scientific, Bench International, Cytiva and Biocom California and launch a comprehensive report into the impact of our Researcher Exchange and Development within Industry (REDI) initiative. Now, more than ever, aspirations for the growth of Australia’s life sciences sector depend on strategic development of an industry-ready workforce with the skills necessary to keep pace with a rapidly sector. REDI has delivered on this mission in spades, starting with a target of delivering training, mentoring and industry placements to 4,700 participants and ending up nearly doubling that to 8,423. Over the weekend, MTPConnect will be hosting the Australian Global VIP Networking and Business Reception at the historic Hotel del Coronado for 500 guests from Australia and around the world; an unique opportunity to
get the networking and business partnering underway. At BIO, MTPConnect is hosting the Team Australia pavilion, providing a highly visible and central location for meetings and business introductions. We’ll also be unveiling some amazing artwork by Ngarrindjeri artist, Jordan Lovegrove – hope to see you at booth number 4335, right in the heart of the San Diego Convention Centre. Our second Women in Life Sciences Leadership Forum and networking luncheon will be held on Monday as the convention opens. Then on Tuesday, continuing our collaboration with the Korean Health Industry Development Institute, KHIDI, we deliver the ‘Connecting Korea and Australian Biotech through open innovation’ seminar. We’re all working to ensure BIO2024 provides business and collaboration opportunities for Australian start-ups, SMEs, researchers and life science innovators so they can step-up, scale-up and attract investment and partnering opportunities. Back home, with the wrapping-up of the much-valued REDI program, we say farewell to team members Victoria (Tori) Mynard and Dr Ashwin Dhanasekaran who were an integral part of the REDI team. Thank you, Tori and Ashwin, for your contribution and we wish you all the best. With so much happening in the sector at the moment, our newsletter below is a great way of keeping up to date on opportunities, events, and news. We look forward to connecting with you soon. Kind regards, Stuart Dignam
Chief Executive Officer

Australia’s Clinical Trials Sector More Valuable Than Ever Before
Figures from a new MTPConnect report reveal that the clinical trials sector generated $1.6 billion for the Australian economy in 2022. The outcome, detailed in MTPConnect’s upcoming clinical trials sector snapshot report, represents growth of more than 4 per cent on 2019 and has been achieved in spite of the 2020 pandemic downturn. MTPConnect CEO, Stuart Dignam, said the outcome was worth recognising on World Clinical Trials Day in May. MTPConnect Welcomes Investment in Clinical Trials One-Stop-Shop

Stroke is the second leading cause of death and third leading cause of disability worldwide, impacting 15 million people globally and 60,000 Australians each year. In response to these challenges, the Heart Research Institute (HRI) and the University of Sydney have spearheaded an initiative aimed at revolutionising stroke therapy. Led by HRI’s Thrombosis Group lead researcher Professor Shaun Jackson, the interdisciplinary team of research scientists and clinicians have identified a naturally occurring anti-clotting agent (AIS109), derived from the saliva of the blood feeding Australian ‘bush tick’.
