Plus other ML updates and opportunities

NaNoWriMo

Hi everyone,

September is upon us, and things are really kicking into gear around here! (I'm still not quite sure what happened to August.)

Here's what's included in this email:

  • Event editing on nanowrimo.org!
  • GWIC call for volunteers
  • Relevant ML resources

Event editing on nanowrimo.org!

I am so thrilled to share that we have finally deployed the ability for MLs to edit events in their regions! 🎉🎉🎉 This has been our most-requested feature update from MLs for years, and I'm sorry it took this long for it to happen. I am so grateful to Jezra for tackling this project after Dave left earlier this year, and an additional enormous thank you to the MLs who helped with testing and troubleshooting this feature over the last few months.

At the bottom of events in your region, you should now see a link to "Edit event" under "Event tools."

Clicking into this will allow you to make any edits you need to your event. If you edit the date, time, or location of the event, that will trigger a notification to those who have RSVP'd to the event to let them know an event has been edited and they should check to confirm that they can still attend.

We've also added a checkbox for people to select if they want to receive these notifications in their site settings.

In addition to this feature making life significantly easier for MLs and giving participants a better experience with their local events, I'm also hoping that this encourages people to use the RSVP feature more consistently! I would recommend letting people know that if they RSVP to an event, they'll be notified of major changes to it. This can help you with planning and make the events feature more robust and functional for everyone involved.

This is obviously a new feature and may have some hiccups to sort out—if you have feedback, questions, or run into any trouble with it, can you let us know in this thread?

GWIC call for volunteers

The marvellous MLs behind the Global Write-In Crawl are looking for volunteers! This incredibly fun and creative event is a multi-day Discord write-in where each "stop" on the crawl is hosted by a different region. It is such a fun way to meet different Wrimos, participate in different regional traditions from all over the world, and get a ton of writing done.

If you'd like to find out more or want to volunteer to host a stop or help moderate the Discord, you can learn more in this thread. (Note that I am not an organizer of this event, merely an enthusiastic supporter of and participant in it, so that thread is the place for questions about it!)

Relevant ML resources

I am going to continue to share equity resources and information that might be relevant for you! If you have any recommended resources that you think other MLs would benefit from, please do share them.

  • Here’s what venues can do to become fat-friendly spaces – and spare a lot of pain — This is a great article that a fat comedian recently wrote about what venues can do to be more fat-friendly. While obviously MLs are not in a position to make any changes to venues, this is one of the best overviews I've seen on this, and I thought it might be useful for you to read to help you feel better prepared to ask venues about their seating.

  • Accessible Social — Our social media manager Tiffany shared this resource with staff, and I thought MLs might find it helpful. Here's how they describe it: "Accessible Social, a free resource and education hub that shares best practices for creating accessible and inclusive social media content."

  • Masking at events — Some MLs in the ML Discord were chatting about masking at events, and made some really great points that I wanted to summarize for everyone:

    • If you want to ask people to mask at an event, it can be nice to have masks available, as people are often quite willing to mask if asked but don't have one on hand.

    • If you don't have a stockpile yourself, please don't spend money on this, but there are quite a few orgs that are set up to share masks, and a lot of companies have a stash on hand that aren't getting much use these days and would be happy to share.

    • Even if you are generally no longer masking yourself, it can be a very thoughtful act of solidarity to have a mask on hand and put it on if any of your participants arrive masked.

As ever, I'm happy to answer your questions in the ML forum, and I'll also try to be available in the ML Discord for the next few hours as well. And just an FYI that I'm off tomorrow and Monday is a holiday in North America, so I won't be around for the next few days. I'll also be getting in touch with US MLs to talk to you about the Barnes and Noble partnership, so look for more on that soon.

Happy September eve, everyone!
