Congratulations to Prof. Marleen Temmerman on her official appointment as Ambassador of the African Academy of Sciences!

In this capacity, Prof. Temmerman is authorised to represent the President of the AAS and to participate in key strategic events on behalf of the Academy. Her role will encompass promoting the AAS's objectives in advancing scientific excellence, innovation and collaboration across the continent, with a particular focus on matters pertaining to science, technology and sustainable development.

Seminar: "But why should we remain silent? Academics & Activism" - 30/1/2026

Multiple crises are confronting the world today. From climate change, genocide, and war to corruption and human rights violations, the current geopolitical landscape is shaking global foundations. This situation places academics in a challenging position. 
This seminar explores these tensions in greater depth, featuring two scholar-activists. Each will give a 20-minute introduction, followed by a discussion with the audience.

CliMigHealth Summer School 2026 - 3-6/2/2026

We are delighted to invite you to the CliMigHealth Africa hub Summer School 2026, hosted by the School for Climate Studies at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, from 3–6 February 2026.

This CPD-accredited, in-person event marks the third rotation of the established CliMigHealth Short Course series, which brings together diverse experts to examine the urgent and interlinked challenges of climate change, migration, and health.

Conference: "Modality in Bantu - Variation and change" - 20-21/2/2026

The International Conference on Modality in Bantu Variation & Change, co-organized by UGent colleagues Maud Devos and Gilles-Maurice de Schryver, is taking place at Mkwawa University of Education (MUCE), Iringa, Tanzania, on 20-21 February 2026.

This workshop aims to bring together linguistic scholars from different areas to explore variation and change in the expression of modality in Bantu languages.

Call for papers: International Workshop - "Cattle Commodification in Global History: Capitalism, Science and Empire" - abstract submission deadline: 23/1/2026

In recent years, the history of livestock and livestock commodities has attracted increasing attention, partly due to the animal turn, the increasing popularity of environmental history and commodity history, and the intertwined ecological and climate crises that are unfolding. Focusing on cattle, perhaps the most emblematic livestock species, this international workshop wants to take stock of recent historiographical developments and push towards a first synthesis that thinks together the various dimensions of cattle commodification from a global history perspective.

Call for Contributions: "Looking back, moving forward: Migration studies in times of societal transformation" - proposal submission deadline: 31/1/2026
 

In a context of rapid and often turbulent societal transformation, migration researchers are increasingly called upon to reflect on how their work engages with and responds to shifting global and local dynamics. This conference invites contributions that critically explore how migration intersects with key sites of inequality, contestation, and change.

Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from the Global South - call 2026 - application deadline: 17/2/2026

With support from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF) Ghent University grants PhD “sandwich” scholarships to promising PhD students from Global South countries who wish to carry out half of their PhD research at Ghent University ('North') and half at a university in the Global South ('South'). Ghent University only finances the part of the research that will be carried out in Ghent (24 months). The candidate must have full-time funding for the other 24 months of research to be carried out in the South.

Announcement of the science awards of the Foundation fiat panis - application deadline: 30/4/2026
 

In 2026, the Foundation fiat panis will once again announce its two science awards dealing with problems of food security in the Global South.

The Hermann Eiselen Science Award is awarded for excellent dissertations and is endowed with 30,000 €.

The Hans Hartwig Ruthenberg-Graduate-Award is awarded for outstanding Master's theses and is endowed with 7,500 €.

AFRICA PLATFORM INITIATIVES AND EVENTS

Human Rights @ De Krook "International: Cartooning and Democracy in Times of Crisis: Lessons from Uganda, Belgium, and beyond" - 28/1/2026

This panel discussion explores how political cartooning critically engages with and intervenes in our political and democratic life, particularly in relation to national and global crises.

This evening brings together the experiences and perspectives of Ugandan political critic and artist Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, Belgian cartoonist 'Lectrr', conflict researcher Sara Weschler (Ghent University), and journalist Gie Goris (MO* - facilitator). Together, they reflect on how cartoons can influence the way we think about politics, education, and democracy, both as a creative platform and as a force that shapes public debate.
