In this capacity, Prof. Temmerman is authorised to represent the President of the AAS and to participate in key strategic events on behalf of the Academy. Her role will encompass promoting the AAS's objectives in advancing scientific excellence, innovation and collaboration across the continent, with a particular focus on matters pertaining to science, technology and sustainable development.

Multiple crises are confronting the world today. From climate change, genocide, and war to corruption and human rights violations, the current geopolitical landscape is shaking global foundations. This situation places academics in a challenging position. 
This seminar explores these tensions in greater depth, featuring two scholar-activists. Each will give a 20-minute introduction, followed by a discussion with the audience.

In recent years, the history of livestock and livestock commodities has attracted increasing attention, partly due to the animal turn, the increasing popularity of environmental history and commodity history, and the intertwined ecological and climate crises that are unfolding. Focusing on cattle, perhaps the most emblematic livestock species, this international workshop wants to take stock of recent historiographical developments and push towards a first synthesis that thinks together the various dimensions of cattle commodification from a global history perspective.

With support from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF) Ghent University grants PhD “sandwich” scholarships to promising PhD students from Global South countries who wish to carry out half of their PhD research at Ghent University ('North') and half at a university in the Global South ('South'). Ghent University only finances the part of the research that will be carried out in Ghent (24 months). The candidate must have full-time funding for the other 24 months of research to be carried out in the South.

This panel discussion explores how political cartooning critically engages with and intervenes in our political and democratic life, particularly in relation to national and global crises.

This evening brings together the experiences and perspectives of Ugandan political critic and artist Jimmy Spire Ssentongo, Belgian cartoonist 'Lectrr', conflict researcher Sara Weschler (Ghent University), and journalist Gie Goris (MO* - facilitator). Together, they reflect on how cartoons can influence the way we think about politics, education, and democracy, both as a creative platform and as a force that shapes public debate.
