Spring 2023 Member Newsletter

A Note from the FMA President

Dear Members,

Springtime is my favorite season. It is because spring represents a time of renewal. The FMA is working on providing our membership with a sense of revitalization in the form of new offerings. We recently launched our inaugural “Coffee Chat” series, titled “Tips for Winning a Charlie Award.” If you missed it and would like to listen to the chat or for more information on our upcoming April Coffee Chat, visit the FMA events’ page.

It is award season—harvest time for content creators and designers! The Charlie Awards opened on January 24. The final deadline to submit your entry is March 7. I hope you will submit your entries to be recognized for the hard work you all put into your publications on a daily basis. One of the highlights of the Florida Media Conference for me is attending the Charlie Awards Gala. Come and be inspired! For more information about the Gala and the conference in July, visit the conference site.

The membership and marketing committee has continued with the renewal momentum in looking for more ways to engage our membership. The FMA will be launching a Facebook group page: the FMA Member Forum. We hope you will join us and encourage your staff to join as well. We look forward to learning from each other. For more information about the FMA Member Forum Facebook page, visit the FMA website.

The conference committee is in full conference programming mode. If you have topics you would like discussed at the conference, please send your ideas to ktower@flpress.com.

We look forward to hearing from our members.

Karla Monterrosa-Yancey
FMA President

Call for Volunteers — Join an FMA Committee in 2023

Interested in furthering the magazine industry in the state, while gaining valuable leadership experience? Join a Florida Magazine Association committee!

The Florida Magazine Association is always looking for interested professionals — and aspiring editorial executives — to join our board. And what better way to do so, than by volunteering on one of our many committees.

We are currently accepting applications for interested FMA members to join one of our committees — Nominating, Marketing & Membership, Contest, Newsletter, Scholarship, and Conference & Webinar.

“Committee members are the heart of FMA,” says FMA President Karla Monterrosa-Yancey. “Our committee members assist us with many vital activities, including the Charlie Awards program, serving as judges for our Doug Damerst Scholarship, and promoting our social presence.”

Founded in 1953, FMA’s mission is to create a community of publishing professionals that help to promote the excellence and standing of magazines in the state. “Our members represent the gamut of magazines in Florida and so do our committee and board members,” adds Monterrosa-Yancey. “We are always looking for interest editors, writers and publishers to join our committees and help us move our association forward.”

If you are interested in becoming a committee member, please contact Karen Tower at ktower@flpress.com by March 31, 2023, and indicate your top two committee choices.

The science fiction and fantasy magazine Clarkesworld has been forced to stop accepting any new submissions from writers after it was bombarded with what it says were AI-generated stories.

In order to work more effectively with advertisers, Hearst Magazines, parent to editorial titles including Cosmopolitan and Esquire, plans to reorganize its internal sales structure around industry categories by the end of the first quarter.

“Opportunity for reach on social media is larger than ever”: How can publishers make the most of it?

by Faisal Kalim
Over 4.5B people use social media – that’s nearly 60% of the world’s population, according to a new report from Echobox. And the average growth rate of social media users globally is 3% per year. “The opportunity for reach on social media is larger than ever,” the authors note. “How can companies make the most of this moment in time?”

Improving click-through traffic between social platforms and websites would help publishers attract readers and build relationships with them. “In this regard, benchmarking data is essential to understanding how different platforms perform in driving traffic back to a website,” they explain.

TV Guide Magazine Launches New Print Monthly, TV Insider, Focused on Streaming

by Michael Schneider
There aren’t many new print publications being launched in this tough media climate, but the company behind TV Guide Magazine is trying just that. The team behind TV Guide Magazine (owned since 2015 by Michigan-based NTVB Media) have launched a new magazine focused on the TV streaming platforms, hitting newsstands this week.

The new monthly magazine, TV Insider, features content from the TV Guide Magazine staff — but jettisons the 70-year-old publication’s listings, instead focusing on more coverage of TV programming. The first issue, which has a March 2023 date, features Kiefer Sutherland (star of Paramount+’s new series “Rabbit Hole,” which premieres March 26) on the cover. Peacock’s breakout hit “Poker Face” star Natasha Lyonne will follow up as the April issue’s cover star.
