Report of the Conference “Responsive Governance and Population Wellbeing in Late Antiquity (3rd-6th century AD)” - 13-15/11/2025

From Wednesday 13 November to Saturday 15 November, the conference Responsive Governance and Population Wellbeing in Late Antiquity (3rd–6th century AD) took place in Stellenbosch, South Africa, organised through a collaboration between the universities of Ghent, Stellenbosch, and the Western Cape (p.i. Prof. Dr. Lieve Van Hoof and Prof. Dr. Philip Bosman).

Report of the Ghent Alumni Event in Ethiopia - 23/11/2025

On Sunday November 23, the Ghent Alumni gathered for the 25th Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa. More than 30 alumni across different Ethiopian universities and research institutes (e.g. Ambo University, Haramaya University, Hawassa University, Jimma University) walked / ran the 10 km through streets of the capital. Following the race, all participants joined for a lunch buffet at the historical Ras Hotel.

Prof. Dr. Isa Blumi is a renowned US scholar and specialist in Middle East Area Studies. His recent book on Yemen has raised awareness about one of the most severe humanitarian disasters of the 21st century.

VLIR-UOS Community Talk: "Burden and Diagnosis of Vaginal and Sexually Transmitted Infections in Pregnancy in Addis Ababa" - 17/12/2025

Sexually transmitted infections have an enormous impact on healthy pregnancies, yet they are frequently present without symptoms. In many sub-Saharan African settings, the true burden of STIs in pregnancy remains a blind spot due to limited diagnostics and a lack of reliable data.

The talk will highlight the scale of undetected infections, compare diagnostic performance, and outline how improved STI detection could strengthen maternal health services in Ethiopia.

CliMigHealth Summer School 2026 - 3-6/2/2026

We are delighted to invite you to the CliMigHealth Africa hub Summer School 2026, hosted by the School for Climate Studies at Stellenbosch University, South Africa, from 3–6 February 2026.

This CPD-accredited, in-person event marks the third rotation of the established CliMigHealth Short Course series, which brings together diverse experts to examine the urgent and interlinked challenges of climate change, migration, and health.

Call for papers: International Workshop - "Cattle Commodification in Global History: Capitalism, Science and Empire" - abstract submission deadline: 23/1/2026

In recent years, the history of livestock and livestock commodities has attracted increasing attention, partly due to the animal turn, the increasing popularity of environmental history and commodity history, and the intertwined ecological and climate crises that are unfolding.

Focusing on cattle, perhaps the most emblematic livestock species, this international workshop wants to take stock of recent historiographical developments and push towards a first synthesis that thinks together the various dimensions of cattle commodification from a global history perspective.

In a context of rapid and often turbulent societal transformation, migration researchers are increasingly called upon to reflect on how their work engages with and responds to shifting global and local dynamics. This conference invites contributions that critically explore how migration intersects with key sites of inequality, contestation, and change.

Doctoral Scholarships for Candidates from the Global South - call 2026 - application deadline: 17/2/2026

With support from its “Special Research Fund” (BOF) Ghent University grants PhD “sandwich” scholarships to promising PhD students from Global South countries who wish to carry out half of their PhD research at Ghent University ('North') and half at a university in the Global South ('South'). Ghent University only finances the part of the research that will be carried out in Ghent (24 months). The candidate must have full-time funding for the other 24 months of research to be carried out in the South.

Announcement of the science awards of the Foundation fiat panis - application deadline: 30/4/2026
 

In 2026, the Foundation fiat panis will once again announce its two science awards dealing with problems of food security in the Global South.

The Hermann Eiselen Science Award is awarded for excellent dissertations and is endowed with 30,000 €.

The Hans Hartwig Ruthenberg-Graduate-Award is awarded for outstanding Master's theses and is endowed with 7,500 €.
