Senior Drama Triumph

This year's Senior Play was a unique and spectacular event titled “All Together Now!”  The title felt fitting as this was the first time that pupils in Form 5 and 6 had collaborated to bring this glamorous show to life.  Songs from a variety of musicals were sung, including pieces from movies such as Mamma Mia, Frozen, and Les Misérables. They were sung in a way which varied from heart-wrenchingly beautiful to highly enthusiastic. These songs were performed on stage after months of rehearsals.  Each rehearsal was a distinct experience, from stressing about costumes to choreographing the dances. The experience of creating such a show was unique and can never be replicated, only remembered. Times like these deserve never to be forgotten as they were full of loud laughter and bright smiles.  Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. In the coming years, we hope that that Mr Milofsky will continue to provide
such a unique experience for pupils at The High School. We were lucky to be a part of a show which not only brought us all together, but brought musical theatre back to HSD.

Senior Hockey Victory

The High School started out strongly with Ben Pasley acting as the glue in midfield linking with the wing backs Sam Walsh and Marcus Empey who found the forwards.  The game started well with an Eli Breen run through the middle defeating several players to create a dangerous circle penetration.  The deadlock was broken with a lovely Tom Whelan attack down the right and a forward shot to the keeper's right.  Ben continued with great pressure in midfield turning the ball over to score a solo goal on the run from his own half.  It was 2-0 at half time. Debutante Ball

Congratulations to the Class of 2021 who attended their Debutante ball this week. We wish them every success as they embark on their lives after The High School.

International Taekwon-Do Representation

Congratulations to Samuel Walsh who will represent Ireland at the International
Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF) Championships in La Nucia, Spain next week.  Sam began studying the sport when he was 8 years old and has been training for 10 years.  He is a 2nd degree black belt and trains six times a week in two clubs. He was selected to represent Ireland three months ago and has been training with the Ireland squad every two weeks at the University Limerick to prepare for the competition.  There are around 50 squad members competing for Ireland, facing European countries like Ukraine, Sweden, Norway, and Italy.  Sam will be competing as a junior in four different events on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday: individual patterns, individual sparring, team patterns, and team sparring.  The competition will be live streamed by the ITF.  We wish Sam and the Ireland Taekwon-Do squad the very best as they progress through the competition.

Geography Week

It is Geography Awareness week and to celebrate pupils took part in a range of activities. Film Club showed "An Inconvenient Truth" at lunch times.  This movie is very important in its message regarding the role that humans play in speeding up climate change. The week before we were extremely fortunate to have our past pupil Ellen Cunningham (HSD, 2006-12) give a talk to Form 4 Geography classes. Ellen is an environmental economist who is currently undertaking her PhD research with Glasgow University on the economic impact of water insecurity on households in Sudan. Her talk was recorded on MS Streams which meant that Form 5 and 6 Geography pupils got to enjoy her input this week. Form 1, 2, and 3 pupils went to the Library and took part in topical Geography quizzes. The corridors were decorated with posters made by our Junior and Senior Geography pupils. Scott Wilgar in Form 6 made this cool directional sign for the foyer. Overall, a wonderful week of Geography games and quizzes was enjoyed by all.

Poetry Now

All pupils are invited to enter the national Poetry Aloud competition. This
competition has entries from the island of Ireland and involves reciting poetry from memory.  In the last couple of years The High School has successfully reached both the semi-finals and the final of the event.  If anyone is interested in entering the competition please contact Ms Wiggle.

Form 4 Business Enterprise

The Form 4 Enterprise class are running a Christmas Sock Day on 10 December to fundraise for Laura Lynn. Pupils will be asked to wear Christmas socks and donate money to the charity.  At the same time Form 4 pupils will be selling Christmas socks in school as part of their Business Enterprise module, so that everyone will be ready to participate in the HSD Christmas Sock Day.  The socks cost €3 and all profits will go to Laura Lynn.  We are taking orders for Christmas socks during lunches - customers can pay by cash and card.  The socks are all different designs and will be wrapped and given out in a ‘lucky pick’ way which will create a bit of excitement during the season of Advent.  On HSD Christmas Sock Day we hope to be able to show off to show off our Christmas socks with pride knowing that we have helped raise money for a very worthwhile cause.
