Good afternoon, We are back from BIO International Convention in San Diego, California and the verdict from Team Australia was ‘best ever BIO!’. With the largest showing of close to 500 delegates, it was great to see so many innovative Australian biotech companies and organisations represented at the world's largest biotech partnering event. And
with a busy program of high-profile activities, we were delighted to have the Minister for Industry & Science, Hon. Ed Husic MP, with us to spearhead Australia’s coordinated presence. None of this would have been possible without the support and cooperation of the state governments of New South Wales, Victoria, Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia, the Department of Industry, Science and Resources, CSIRO and AusBiotech. Thanks also to our industry supporters; CSL, Novartis, Cytiva, QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute and ASX. MTPConnect hosted the Australian Global VIP Networking and Business Reception at the historic Hotel del Coronado for more than 500 guests from Australia and around the world just before BIO kicked off; and we were delighted that President and CEO of the Biotechnology Innovation Organization (BIO) John F. Crowley was able to join us for the occasion, along with Minister Husic, CSL’s Dr Debbie Drane and Governor of Victoria, Her Excellency Hon Professor Margaret Gardner AC. Our second Women in Life Sciences Leadership Forum and networking luncheon during BIO was well attended, with the spotlight on female founders sharing their leadership journeys including the Governor of
Victoria, and biotech leaders Professor Fabienne Mackay, Stacy Feld, Erica Kneipp, Sue MacLeman and Dr Liz Dallimore. And we delivered the ‘Connecting Korea and Australian Biotech through open innovation’ seminar in collaboration with the Korean Health Industry Development Institute, KHIDI. Thanks to Celltrion Inc, CSL, Sanofi and Lotte Biologics who spoke on their approach to Open Innovation and how researchers and startups can get involved in developing therapeutics of the future. Above all, hosting the Team Australia
pavilion gave us a front row seat to a hive of activity in the San Diego Convention Centre, and it’s where we were able to announce some exciting new initiatives with the Minister for Industry and Science. To support the growth of life sciences companies between Australia and US, we signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Biocom California committing to working closely together. This will help open-up new US market, commercial and collaboration opportunities for Australia’s life science start-ups, SMEs and
researchers. Watch this space! We unveiled the Biomedical AI Sprints Accelerator with Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM) Hub to help biomedical companies harness the power of data and artificial intelligence (AI). This is a great opportunity for high growth SMEs to be part of, and we are holding a webinar info session on 10 July, so please join
us to find out how to apply by end of July and secure matched funding to participate. Throughout the conference we captured some fascinating interviews for the MTPConnect Podcast and this week we released the first episode in a series called BIO Bites. Check out the new episode with ARM Hub’s Chief Operating Officer Samuel Jesuadian and find out how AI can boost Australia’s biomedical sector and why companies should apply now for the Biomedical AI Sprints Accelerator (BASA). Australia’s clinical trials capabilities and expertise was a key highlight of Australia’s Pavilion at BIO. We released a new MTPConnect snapshot report revealing that Australia’s clinical trials sector generated $1.6 billion for the Australian economy in 2022 – that is growth of more than 4 per cent on 2019 that has been achieved in spite of the
2020 pandemic downturn. While the figures show value has increased, there are signs of stagnation in other key metrics. I encourage you to take a look at the report which was produced in collaboration with L.E.K. Consulting - Australia’s Clinical Trials Sector - Advancing innovative healthcare and powering economic growth. The
figures show that we can’t take success for granted and need to keep innovating and investing to stay competitive with other international markets like Singapore, US and South Korea. Areas we’ve identified for ongoing attention include improving efficiency in trial start up, enhancing data transparency, increasing patient awareness to support recruitment, and expanding the workforce to support clinical trials growth. And recent commitments to expansion of the National One Stop Shop initiative are very welcome. The
report also highlights five emerging opportunities to consider including patient engagement, digital health solutions, precision healthcare, innovative trial designs and medical device trials. This month we say farewell to a number of our valued team members. Long-standing team member Dr Gerard Gibbs has led the very successful Biomedtech Horizons Program which has now wrapped up. Gerard’s contribution to BMTH, MTPConnect and the medtech sector has been impressive and we wish him all the best for his next endeavours. Thank you to Tamlyn O’Connor in Brisbane who has been instrumental in helping deliver our wonderful international engagement activities at BIO, the Medtech Conference and beyond. In
our South Australian team, we farewell Dr Natalie Rickers and Pia Vogrin. As Engagement and Communications Manager, Pia has been a driving force in our Adelaide Intermediary Program since its inception and we wish her well as she takes on a new opportunity with BHP. And we thank SA team member Natalie for her contribution to the AIP through the Global Market Navigator Program. With so much happening in the sector, we hope you continue to enjoy our newsletter and stay connected to opportunities, events, and news. Kind regards, Stuart Dignam

The COVID-19 pandemic and the search for a vaccine shone a spotlight on sovereign capabilities in the medical technology,
biotechnology and pharmaceuticals (MTP) sector in Australia, underscoring the critical importance of R&D of innovative technologies to address complex human health challenges. The pandemic also highlighted the need for Australian-based manufacturing and a robust supply chain to ensure the continuous provision of medical products. Recognising the role of Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) in supporting the healthcare sector, MTPConnect’s REDI initiative had pinpointed GMP competency as a key skills gap in its needs assessment. To address this gap, REDI engaged the Centre for Biopharmaceutical Excellence (CBE) to form a strategic partnership with ARCS Australia, CBE Pure Solutions, Merck Australia, Translational Research Institute and University of Technology Sydney to launch two different GMP training programs. The programs are specifically designed to provide
participants with a real-world perspective and to enable the interpretation and application of GMP in practice. Find out more...
