Welcome to the September edition of the Salamanca Market stallholder news

Hi everyone,

Welcome to the November edition of the stallholder newsletter.  As we step into the busy summer period and Christmas trading, I would like to encourage you all to send through you gift ideas to be included in our Christmas gift guide. We will be promoting these through social media, it's a great way to promote your products and encourage people to shop at the market. More information is provided below.

You may have noticed in recent months that, after many years working at the market as operations coordinator, I am no longer racing around in high vis, helping to tow cars or regularly working with stallholders. I have recently been appointed to the position of Manager City Welcome, which includes the Travel Centre, Customer Services, the Volunteer Program and importantly, Salamanca Market. I will certainly miss the early morning chats with stallholders and the transformation of an empty street to a bustling market. Hopefully everyone is familiar with Henry who is acting in my previous role. Henry and Jasmin are the first point of contact for any market-related enquiries, as I step into this new role.

  • Bottled - For the distilleries, wines, beers,

  • Grown - For the flowers, fresh farm produce, vegetables, summer fruits

  • Made – Chocolates, jams, honey and preserves

Please note that depending on how many we get, we may reorganise the lists to ensure we have a good selection in each. We may even create a few extra groups, so send us your ideas!
If you would like to be a part of this, please email us some lovely photos of your individual products and a brief description to salamancamarket@hobartcity.com.au

Stallholder behaviour

The end of the year brings a range of challenges for the market crew, stallholders and everyone that visits Salamanca Market. Casual stallholders increased desire to trade with limited site availability, increased customer attendance including international visitors, the pressures of external events and less room on site, all impact the weekly operation of Salamanca Market.

We would like to remind all stallholders, their employees and their representatives, that everyone is required to adhere to the Salamanca Market Code of Stallholder Conduct, which is outlined in your Salamanca Market Stallholder Agreement.

Market attendance

The busiest time of year is upon us and this means that there are more stallholders trying to get a spot on market days.

We understand that it is sometimes difficult for you to give advance notice of your absence at the market, but it would be greatly appreciated if you could notify the market team as far in advance as possible. That way we can fill the market and give the opportunity to trade to another stallholder.

There are several easy ways you can let us know:

Planned absence:

  • If you know when you are going to be away, complete the Absence Notification Form on the Salamanca Market website. This is the preferred method for planned absences.

You were planning to come to the market, but have to cancel:

  • If you need to cancel your attendance, in the week prior email salamancamarket@hobartcity.com.au
  • For last minute absence notifications, after 12 pm on Friday call/message the Market Supervisor on 0419 482 675.

Watch your money

As more people are at the market shopping each week in the lead up to Christmas, there is an increased risk of theft and anti-social behaviour. Market stalls can be an attractive target as they are out in the open, have stock on display, can be crowded and also have minimal security.

The steps below may help to reduce the possibility of opportunistic theft at your stall:

  1. Keep cash or tills on your person, or located in areas where the public can't access them and hidden from sight
  2. Carefully consider where you place any high-value stock in your stall
  3. Try not to turn your back on customers, as this can be a ploy to distract you while they, or someone else, steals from you
  4. Report any theft or suspected theft immediately. If you have seen someone stealing, report it to the police and Market Supervisor with a description, as that will make it easier to identify individuals or groups operating in the market.

Market crew can usually be onsite quicker than police and can keep tabs on any offender while the police are on their way. Stallholders should not attempt to physically confront suspected offenders. If you recognise someone with a suspected history of theft in the market, contact the Market Supervisor.

Our new stallholder numbers

Our new stallholder numbers have mostly been distributed and we are currently reprinting a new lot of numbers, mainly for the silos end of the market and the plaza area, as one of the boxes is missing from the printers. These numbers have been screen printed on instead of the usual plastic wrap - if any stallholders think that their number is showing signs of the paint chipping or wearing off, please email us and include a photo of your sign, to salamancamarket@hobartcity.com.au.
