I’d put off updating my browser’s software until glitches and poor performance forced me to make time for it. After my software downloads, the update will install new programs and uninstall out-of-date programs. Written by programmers, software updates provide new programs of instructions for the computer hardware to follow. These instructions enable the computer to deliver new features, processes, and other enhancements needed for it to continue performing well as the environment changes and evolves. Although it may not be obvious, uninstalling or removing old programs is as equally important as installing new ones to ensure that the new software functions well. The update is not complete without the removal of old programs. It is interesting to note that updating programs also occurs in other settings beyond technology. For example, the new roots grown by orchid plants in the spring provide new instructions for guiding the plant’s actions as sun, wind, and rain patterns change and alter their environments. In this case, the old programs are removed when old roots die and eventually fall off. Installing new programs and removing old ones also occurs in human operations although we may not think of it in this way. We may be unaware of how our internal programs of instruction direct and control our perceptions, decisions, and activities of daily living. Just as we generally don’t know how computer programs are written or operate, we may not understand how our internal programs come into being or realize that they become outdated and need to be replaced periodically. THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS FORM THE BASIS OF OUR INTERNAL PROGRAMSJust as programmers write computer programs, our habitual patterns of thoughts and feelings create internal programs that govern our beliefs and actions. This is especially true for matters of health. Our habitual thoughts and feelings about health create the programs that govern our perceptions and actions, often without our awareness. Unfortunately, limited knowledge and beliefs can combine with negative health messaging to conceal our vast potential to attain and sustain high levels of health. But it doesn’t have to be this way. UPDATING THINKING UPGRADES HEALTHAt my computer, unless I’m prompted by an onscreen alert, I am not aware of the need for a software update. And even with the prompts, I usually delay taking action until the computer’s declining performance becomes unacceptable. Similarly, we are mostly unaware of the need to update negative health-related thought patterns and programs with advanced information about the many effective ways to build health. In addition, discarding unhelpful beliefs enhances an update’s effectiveness and is essential to optimal functioning. These types of upgrades make learning and mastering key health-building skills easy.
