Getting started with VA Education Benefits can seem like a big hurdle, and we're here to support your success! We certify Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits using a VA-approved dual certification process. Your first enrollment certification prompts VA to send out your book stipend and first Monthly Housing Allowance disbursements without delays. REMINDER: The second certification will take place after the add/drop date, Friday, September 4th and report your tuition and fees. For all non-refundable tuition benefit considerations, we are required to reduce the amount reported to VA to ensure accuracy and prevent disruptions or overpayments. VA Education beneficiaries with tuition coverage are protected from holds, late fees, or other penalties and are coded in the university system to reflect their eligibility. If you are awaiting VA tuition payment and any of these are applied, please reach out to us as soon as possible via email (veterans@pitt.edu), or by phone at 412-624-3213, and we will work to have them waived. NOTE: The Fry Scholarship is the Gold-Star family access to Chapter 33 benefits, and is identical. Chapter 31 Veterans Readiness and Employment
Chapter 31 Veterans Readiness and Employment (VR&E) is available for veterans or exiting service members with service-connected disabilities. While primarily a work-ready vocational resource, VA directly supports degree attainment using expanded benefits through a rehabilitation plan administered by VA counselors that can cover books, material costs, and other assistive devices necessary to ensure maximum academic success. Student veterans with Post 9/11 GI Bill eligibility should consider which benefit would be right for them if also eligible to apply for VR&E. The GI Bill Comparison Tool can provide an estimate of costs and stipends for all VA Education Benefits while attending at Pitt. Chapter 35 Dependents and Survivors Education Assistance
Chapter 35 Dependents and Survivors Education Assistance (DEA) provides a direct stipend to surviving family members or dependents of Permanently and Totally disabled veterans. Like some other VA benefits, monthly enrollment verification is required for recipients to receive their monthly stipend, and VA provides a few options to complete this step. Please visit the VA's Monthly Verification page for more information, you may also elect to receive text message requests. Chapter 30 & 1606 Montgomery GI Bills
The Chapter 30 Montgomery GI Bill Active Duty (MGIB-AD) and Chapter 1606 Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR) programs provide a direct payment to assist with the cost of education. Each benefit is separate, provide different payments, and do not include tuition. The GI Bill Comparison Tool can provide an estimate of costs and stipends for all VA Education Benefits while attending at Pitt. Veteran Service Organization Spotlight
