Professional Learning Community: Proficiency-Based Assessments

The NLRC Learning Community is a professional development opportunity open to LCTL instructors (K-16) nationwide, which began this semester on Oct. 16th. It's not too late to sign up and join us! The learning community will provide relevant accessible readings, hands-on activities, and opportunities for sustained pedagogical discussion.

This year, the learning community will focus on assessment. Starting from proficiency-based language objectives or can-do statements, the learning community will develop task-based, proficiency-based formative and summative assessments that fit your course or program. We are still accepting participants, so make sure to fill out the interest form, which can be found in the link below!

You can still join the Professional Learning Community!!

Find out more information on the Professional Learning Community page.

The co-organizing teams at University of Chicago and at Michigan State University are proud to announce the theme of SLCTLS 2024: Differentiated Instruction. SLCTLS will be a pre-conference event of the NCOLCTL conference on April 18, 2024.

Hear Dr. Garza explore topics and issues around differentiated instruction, intersectional identities, mixed proficiency levels, and other factors that influence and inform student motivation for language learning. A panel of LCTL instructors will respond with their own experiences and expertise.

NLRC Social Media Highlight

In the spooky month of October, there are many notable holidays and recognition days that align with our drive. This month, the NLRC acknowledged and celebrated World Teachers’ Day on October 5th, where we recognized the importance and effort put forth by educators all over the world in all subjects. Topics of mathematics, science, history, and—our favorite—languages are crucial to society, and we stand by teachers every day. On October 9th, we acknowledged Indigenous Peoples’ Day, where we celebrate the people that first called this land home, and we continue to be aware of the real and devastating losses that have and continue to affect Indigenous communities. This month also sees the conclusion of Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month, which ran from September 15th to October 15th! Make sure to follow our social media pages to discover more culturally significant days in the following months!
