Click here JUNE 9, 2022 Talking Points![]() It’s the Ignorance for Us It was only two years ago that the world went through a new generation of racial reckoning—we’ll let you digest that one. Black squares filled up feeds, donation lists were shared and uncomfortable conversations were had inside and outside the office. Yup, (most) workplaces started, and still are, scrambling to decolonize their institutions, whether finding their own diversity hire(s) or imposing race 101 courses (lol). This learning and unlearning can be clumsy—especially for establishments raised in years of racial bias, but there’s no excuse not to do the work. The Cannes Film Festival, for one, did not understand the assignment. Valerie Complex, a Black film critic who attended this year's film festival, detailed all the microaggressions she faced at Cannes. In a piece for Deadline, she wrote, “‘I made my way to the American Pavilion when I was again ‘randomly’ stopped by security. Their reasoning: I had a large bag with me. But everyone else had large bags as well. You would think Interpol was searching my bag as security dumped its entire contents onto the table so they could examine the items and check every crevice of my bag. Even passersby were shocked by what they saw. I thought to myself, ‘Here we go.’” And it got worse from there—Complex was even mistaken for an actor in Mati Diop’s Atlantics. Complex isn’t alone. A Black writer tweeted, "Valerie's experience with Cannes gave me trauma flashbacks to 2020 when former friends and peers began a smear campaign due to the color of my skin. It put me in a depression and spiral for several months while several racist editors kept harassing me for months upon end." Let’s be real, for years, major film festivals thrived on excluding people of color. As Complex mentioned in her piece, Cannes has been around for 75 years. It wasn’t until 2019 did a Black female director compete and win a major award for the first time in its history. To announce a “first” after decades of programming is not a success. It’s a shame. If it isn’t obvious, the Cannes Film Festival institution needs a whole makeover inside and outside the Palais de Festivals.
