When you can see the forest but not the trees: Strategies for Neurodivergence in Academia When: 2 November 2023, 1:00pm - 3:00pm Neurodivergent people can often see the forest but not the trees when assessing a problem. This is often referred as “strategic thinking” or a “Helicopter View”. This workshop will focus on some of the ways that Neurodivergency can affect your progress during your time as a postgraduate student; providing advice on how to use strategic thinking to overcome and plan for potential disruptions in your thesis progress. Improve your research through community engagement When: 21 November 2023, 10:00am - 11:30am 'You've identified a gap in knowledge and now you're undertaking a PhD or Masters to fill that gap. Did you know that by engaging with members of the community who have lived experience related to your topic, that you can improve your research? Hearing the perspectives of those who have (for example) survived cancer, or who live with type 1 diabetes, can not only improve the quality of your research and help you to consider other options, but can make your work more meaningful. Exploring Chi-square and correlation in R In this hands-on training, we will traverse into the realm of inferential statistics in R, beginning with correlation and reliability. We will present a brief conceptual overview and the R procedures for computing reliability and correlation (Pearson’s r, Spearman’s Rho and Kendall’s tau) in real world datasets. 14 November, 9.30am-12.30pm. Traversing t tests in R This workshop aims to familiarise you with basic statistical concepts in R from reading in and manipulating data, checking assumptions, statistical tests and visualisations. This is not an advanced statistics course, but is instead designed to gently introduce statistical comparisons and hypothesis testing in R. 15 November, 9.30am-12.30pm. Register here. Exploring ANOVAs in R This workshop covers one and two-way Analyses of Variance (ANOVA) and their non-parametric counterparts in R. Excel for Researchers Learn to use one of the most widespread data wrangling tools, Microsoft Excel, to import, sort, filter, protect, transform, summarise, merge, and visualise research data. NewsCall for Reviewers: University Copyright Website The University Library has prepared a draft restructure and revision of the Copyright Advice website and is seeking HDR students to review the new ‘Copyright Overview’ and ‘Research & Publishing’ sections before their publication. Participating in the review is a great opportunity to learn more about copyright for your thesis project and to help improve a key resource for other students. It should take around 2.5 hours and involves providing suggestions in markup or comment in a Microsoft Word document as well as completing a short feedback form.
