Dr. Albert Lin Awarded SOM's Mentoring Merit Award

Dr. Albert Lin was recognized this past week at the annual University of Pittsburgh's School of Medicine Faculty Mentor Awards. Dr. Lin was awarded the Medical Student Research Mentoring Merit Award, which celebrates faculty that demonstrate significant impact in guiding their mentees through their research project effort. Dr. Lin is no stranger to being a great mentor. He was also a recipient of the Philip Troen Excellence in Medical Student Research Mentoring Award last year. This distinction is based on graduating University of Pittsburgh student recommendations for outstanding mentoring over the course of their longitudinal research project.

PittOrtho seeks to be a leader in educating the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons through its residency and fellowship training programs. We are proud to have mentors like Dr. Lin on our team!

UPMC Sports Medicine's TREAT Sport-related Concussion Conference Welcomes 400+ Attendees

The UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program and University of Pittsburgh Concussion Research Laboratory hosted the Targeted Rehabilitation and Evidence-based Active Treatments (TREAT) Sport-related Concussion Conference on April 20-21, 2024. The conference provided cutting-edge advances in evidence-based clinical care and research from assessment to treatment for both sport-related concussion and brain health.

Course directors included Micky Collins, PhD, Clinical and Executive Director of the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program and Anthony Kontos, PhD, Research Director, Vice-Chair Clinical Research and Professor, UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program.

BMRC/Ferguson Lab Group Earns Most Cited Paper, Ranked by JOR Spine


Members from both BMRC and Ferguson Spine Laboratories have been recently recognized as one of JOR Spine's most cited authors. The paper, "Percutaneous lumbar annular puncture: A rat model to study intervertebral disc degeneration and pain-related behavior," is one of JOR Spine's top 10 most-cited papers published. This achievement highlights the impact of our work within the orthopaedic community and PittOrtho's dedication to research. It is an essential core component of our identity, and we are proud to have so many talented individuals like our researchers in the Ferguson and BMRC labs to lead the charge!

Dr. MaCalus V. Hogan Awarded Chuck Cooper Foundation Leadership Award

Congratulations to Dr. MaCalus V. Hogan, recipient of the 2024 Chuck Cooper Foundation Leadership Award. 

The Chuck Cooper Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is dedicated to honoring the life and achievements and continuing the legacy of Naismith Basketball Hall of Famer, Charles “Chuck” Cooper, the first African-American drafted into the National Basketball Association. The Foundation awards graduate-level scholarships and provides leadership development programs, mentorship, and networking opportunities to underserved students.

Dr. Hogan exemplifies leadership and excellence in his field. His dedication to advancing the medical field is evident through his work with various professional ballet and sports teams, and over 200 scholarly contributions.

"We are incredibly proud to recognize Dr. Hogan's exceptional achievements," said a spokesperson for the Chuck Cooper Foundation. "His dedication aligns perfectly with Chuck Cooper’s legacy of excellence and leadership, and his work continues to inspire future generations."

PittOrtho and UPMC Host Nth Dimensions Bioskills Program

On Saturday, April 13, UPMC and PittOrtho were proud to host Nth Dimensions, a non-profit organization whose goal is to eliminate healthcare disparities in all communities by diversifying the physician workforce.

The Dermatology and Orthopaedic Surgery Bioskills Workshop for Undergraduate and Medical school students was about 2-3 hours long and exposed students to hands-on clinical and surgical lab skills. The sessions included a short talk by Nth Dimensions Executive Director, Letitia Bradford, MD, FAAOS, FACS and William A.J. Ross, Jr., MD, FAAOS, Director of Clinical Education.

2024 Albert B. Ferguson, Jr, MD Resident Research Day


The Albert B. Ferguson Jr., MD, Resident Research Day was the capstone of another remarkable year of research for PittOrtho residents.

For this year’s presentations, we welcomed Leesa M. Galatz, MD as keynote speaker. Dr. Galatz is Professor & Chair at the Leni and Peter May Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, NY. Dr. Galatz’s talk  “Lessons in Leadership: Have it All, Just Not All at Once” was outstanding!

Our program is one of a few in the United States that offers the opportunity for residents to participate in one year of dedicated research during their residency training. Twelve residents (4 junior and 8 chief) gave presentations on their research work and were judged. The following awards were given:
