Dear Parents and Guardians
Whenever I have a chance to walk the campus, I am continually inspired by what is taking place in and out of the classroom. From the energy of the Year 9 Market Day to the dedication students show in their learning, there is always a positive atmosphere and a deep willingness to make the most of every opportunity.
Year 5 and 6 students have had a big week of rehearsals for Mary Poppins and are looking forward to the performances in two weeks. All of the students have put considerable effort to their preparations, and there is no doubt that tickets will sell quickly when they go on sale. Please keep an eye on your messages for ticket details to avoid disappointment.
I am delighted to share that Tony Yu has been selected to represent New Zealand at badminton in the upcoming Youth Olympics in Dakar. Tony is an exceptional talent and has proven his ability on the courts over many years. Tony brings the same dedication to all aspects of school life and is an excellent example of what a well-rounded education can look like. We look forward to following his progress later in the year.
On Monday afternoon, our orchestra performed exceptionally well at the KBB festival held at the Holy Trinity Cathedral. The quality of the music was incredible, and all of the students and staff involved should be very proud. Reflecting on our music programme, it has come a long way over the last couple of years, and I can see the determination to continue on that path. The arts are flourishing
across the school, adding a real richness to the student experience.
Yesterday, it was great to host Simon Hyde, Chief Executive of HMC, as part of his visit across Australia and New Zealand. HMC was formed in 1869 and is a network of over 400 outstanding schools across the world, which we joined earlier this year following our accreditation. Membership gives us access to more than 20 groups covering all aspects of the school, connecting us to like-minded educators who all bring unique experiences and perspectives to the conversation. This is particularly important as our strategic plan drives us to find the very best evidence-based approaches to teaching and learning and put them into practice in our classrooms.
Year 6 students completed progression tests this week, and while the
assessments will have been difficult for them, they represent the level of challenge needed at this stage of their learning. While there is a natural temptation to focus on a score, the real learning will take place when they review their work, respond to the feedback and plan for how to improve throughout the remainder of the year.
Each Monday morning at our staff briefing, I share results and highlights from the previous week and recently this has become very difficult. The performance of our teams across every year level has been exceptional through the winter season and many of our teams will be appearing in playoffs over the coming weeks. It is important that our athletes remember that success is built through the work completed in training. While they may face strong competition, they can take confidence from the preparation and
commitment they have already shown throughout the season.
It is the turn of our senior students for assessments next week with the start of their mock exams. It is important these tests are taken seriously as they represent the start of the run toward the external exams in October. You will have seen the message regarding Daffodil Day and the various activities, please show your support toward a very worthy cause.
With a very busy calendar over the next few weeks, there is likely to be additional pressure for many students that they may not face at other times. If your child is showing signs of not coping, please reach out, and we will make sure they feel well supported at school.
I hope you all enjoy the weekend
ahead.
Regards
Mike Waller
