May is a month of Champ of Champs Our journey to the Bowls 3Five Finals!"The Undisputed Auckland Champions” If the welcome was anything to go by, we were going to have an amazing weekend ahead of us. This is my account of making it to the Bowls 3Five Finals... read the full story here -- Andy Ellis Introducing Michael AndersonMichael spends the majority of his days crunching numbers! If it’s not with Bowls Auckland as Finance Manager, you’ll find him scoring cricket matches for NZ Cricket and in the Graphics section of television broadcasts. In addition, he has a voluntary role as Treasurer for The Black Grace dance company. He has lived in Auckland his whole life, graduating with a BCom/GradDipCom from the University of Auckland after four years of study from 2002 to 2005. Since then, Michael has worked in various Accounting and Financial Management roles, many of those years being in a self-employed capacity and a great mix of small to medium-sized companies and non for profit organisations. For accounts, Bluewater and Rawhiti applications, you can email Michael on RIP Helen StallardHelen Stallard might best be described as a strong lady. But for those who came to know her (like I had the privilege of doing only over the last 6 or 7 years), below the surface was a marshmallow of kindness and caring. Helen could easily have mixed with the likes of Clint Eastwood, Arnold Schwarzenegger or Bruce Willis. She would have told Eastwood that she was indeed feeling lucky … scoffed at Schwarzenegger insisting he’ll be back … and told Willis to stop drivelling on with all his yippee-ki-yays. They would’ve known she was the boss. Read the full obituary here... Farewell HelenMembers of the Auckland Bowls Umpires Association are sad to learn of the death of Helen Stallard, a highly valued and respected member of our Association and one of our Patrons. Over many years, she filled several roles, from President, Committee Member, Re-accreditation examiner, and international examiner. In her earlier days, she was a New Umpires Manager and Events Manager at Bowls Auckland and was recently elected to World Bowls Umpires Committee. She was meticulous in the way she ran tournaments and was a great example to younger umpires. Helen will be sadly missed by all our members who were associated with her. -- Sue Curran Pinkle Park!Last Sunday, Pringle Park hosted over 70 people for fun and lunch to fundraise for Pink Ribbon. Aptly renamed “Pinkle Park” for the day, club members were fully supportive of such a worthy event by donating many of the prizes, making donations, and providing the facility at no cost. While it was a day for the ladies to be at the fore, the club members' response was truly tremendous. We look forward to hosting again next year. -- Dave Windler
Presidents' Day at ABCOn Sunday, 7 May 2023 Auckland Bowling Club held our annual Presidents Day where 24 teams were seeking to win the Paul Kortegast Silver Plate. Eight teams from Northland Kittyhawks joined us for the day and we were so pleased we were able to raise $1.000. The winners were Peter Blucher, Teo Teora and Mae Taurua. -- Greame Scott College DayOld Boys of Dilworth College Errol Lee, Roger Pye, Helen Blick (her father attended Dilworth), and Colin O'Brien on Sunday, 7 May crossed the green to take the Rothman Trophy once more take become College Day champs. Dilworth last held the titles in 1990 and 2021. Remuera Bowling Club has hosted College Day since 1969 - the inaugural winning team was St Patrick's, Wellington. All thoroughly enjoyed College Day, with many teams getting into the pageantry spirit by donning school colours and gear. Others included: Auckland Grammar School; Avondale College; International Mixed; Kings College; Manawatu Colleges; Mount Albert Grammar School; New Plymouth Boys High School; Saint Kentigern College; Selwyn College; St Cuthberts as well as Remuera "Phil-Ins" team skipped by Phil Ware to avoid a bye. -- Cynthia Morris Champ of Champs PairsWishing everyone the best of luck for this weekend's Pairs.
