New season kicks off with 1-5 Triples this weekend

Blackjacks' women worlds best!

The New Zealand women’s bowls team capped an excellent campaign at the 2023 World Bowls Championships, awarded the prestigious Taylor Trophy at the conclusion of the event.

New Zealand has only previously won the Taylor Trophy, awarded to the best overall women’s team, on one occasion, at the 1973 world championships 50 years ago.

Bowls NZ introduces new pathway rules

Last week saw the introduction of a new precedent ruling creating restrictions around players holding multiple memberships playing in simultaneous events.

So, what does it mean for you?

This ruling will only impact those who hold full playing rights at more than one club. There are two parts to the ruling.

Ian Birch Memorial

Ian Birch Memorial Tournament was held last weekend, 9 & 10 September, at Epsom Bowls. Ian was our Patron and a member for over 50 years, so this Memorial Tournament was to celebrate his lifelong commitment and contribution to the club and the sport of bowls.

It was a fantastic event, enjoyed by all attending - the club is looking forward to hosting it again next year. Ian's family were on hand for the trophy presentation and sincerely appreciated the club holding an event in Ian's honour.

Congratulations to the trophy winners: John Boy, Adam and Brendon. Thanks to all the participants, a big thanks to Roger for organising the event and to everyone who pitched in to help.

Sapphire Jubilee Opening at Kohi

The 2023/24  Opening Day was a special one for Kohi Bowing Club -  the Club's Sapphire Jubilee Year - 65 years! Although 65 is generally noted as a time to begin to slow down, Kohi is revving up!

The occasion was attended by community and regional politicians; Angus McPhee, Ōrākei Local Board member, Sarah Powrie, Ōrākei Local Board Deputy Chair, Club Patron Julie Kennedy, Barfoot & Thompson St. Heliers/Kohimarama and Auckland Deputy Mayor Desley Simpson (pictured with Kohi President Margie Sorensen).  Kohimarama Bowling Club is very grateful for funding from our local board and the Council to support ongoing improvements and programmes.

Desley, Sarah and Angus are in good company, joining Kohi's list of past Opening Day politico Official guests, which includes Sir Dove Myer Robinson and Sir Robert Muldoon, local MPs Bob Tizard and Clem Simich and in 1975 Robert Muldoon who held his election victory party at the clubrooms a few months later. Winston Peters MP attended the Club’s first Gold Card Tournament in 2012.

We are hoping to see all of you during this 'quinsexagennial' season!
