Bishop's Letter for the Collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development
|
|
|
“Those who lead the many to justice shall be like the stars forever. (Dan 12:3)
First Reading, Sunday, November 17, 2024
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Peace be with you!
Sunday November 17 is the World Day of the Poor, whose theme this year is “The prayer of the poor rises up to God (cf. Sirach 21:5)”. On that date our diocese will participate in the U.S. Bishops’ annual national collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development-CCHD. Through this second collection, support for CCHD enables the active participation of those experiencing poverty to address this complex challenge and build a just society with their neighbors.
Please remember that 25% of the CCHD collection in our diocese stays in Hawaii to respond to challenges of poverty in communities here. CCHD funds donated from our parishes have contributed to a variety of effective community efforts, including helping houseless survivors of natural disasters rebuild their lives; assisting formerly incarcerated or homeless women with transitional housing and job training; and supporting non-profit organizations helping low-income families build and own affordable housing.
I strongly encourage all to give generously to the CCHD collection as a way of giving witness to Jesus, responding to the prayer of the poor by building a world with justice for all.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Larry Silva
Bishop of Honolulu

The AGAPE Youth and Young Adult Ministry has been active so long, its participants now include the grandchildren of some of its earliest members.
AGAPE — “Almighty God and People Encounter” — was established at St. Joseph Church in Waipahu 35 years ago, and it continues to be a vibrant ministry that serves all ages and contributes to many aspects of parish life.
Geri and Al Simbahon are the married founders of AGAPE. In 1987, the couple established the ministry with the blessing of La Salette Father Alphonse “Larry” Larochelle, then the pastor of St. Joseph. Read more...

Listening to the Prayer of the Poor

From the Office for Social Ministry
“The World Day of the Poor…is a pastoral opportunity that it challenges every believer to listen to the prayer of the poor, becoming aware of their presence and needs and to implement initiatives that concretely help the poor.” Message of Pope Francis for World Day of Poor November 17, 2024
This November 17th, Pope Francis invites us all to pause, to listen, and to hear the prayer of the poor. His message for the World Day of the Poor centers on the theme, “The prayer of the poor rises up to God” (Sir 21:5). Our Holy Father points out the sacred scriptures teaching that “Christian hope embraces the certainty that our prayer reaches God’s presence; not just any prayer but rather the prayer of the poor.” Pope Francis urges us to “read the prayer of the poor on their faces and in their stories” ––to share in their struggles so that we may all find healing together. He reminds all that “God knows the sufferings of his children because he is an attentive and caring father,” always caring for “the poor, the marginalized, the suffering and the forgotten.” This message is a call to both prayer and to action with the poor. Pope Francis reminds us
that in the Gospel “We are called in every circumstance to be friends of the poor, following in the footsteps of Jesus who always began by showing solidarity when dealing with the least among us.” Christ’s Gospel call involves responding to the prayer of the poor with actions which can begin by “offering a smile, a word of comfort, or a simple gesture of kindness.” God calls us all to an active response with the poor to overcome poverty as obstacle to integral human development for all. Restoring Communion from the Cup
|
|

*This memo had been shortened to fit into the eNews. To read Bishop Silva's full memo, click "read more" below.*
From: Bishop Larry Silva
Date: October 26, 2024
Subject: Holy Communion as the Precious Blood (Communion from the Cup)
Since the pandemic, some parishes have restored the practice of offering the Blood of the Lord to the faithful at every Mass, while others have not done so.
While we do believe that a communicant receives the entire Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Christ by receiving Communion under either species, it is a fuller sign of the sacrament to offer the Precious Blood to those who choose to partake of it. It is a sign the Lord himself instituted as a memorial of his offering his Body and pouring out his Blood on the cross for our salvation.
I therefore would like to ask all pastors to prepare for offering the Communion cup to the faithful in their parishes. For some, this might take some organizing and training. The faithful should also be catechized about the fact that the Lord intended his sacrament of love to be given under both species, even though the full Christ is received under one species only. And all should be reminded that, after the consecration, we never refer to the contents of the chalice as “wine,” but rather as “the Precious Blood” of the Lord.
I ask that every parish that has not already done so offer the Communion cup to all the faithful no later than Ash Wednesday, March 5, 2025. Thank you for your cooperation!

Decree Concerning the 2024 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception
|
|
| |
From Most Reverend Clarence (Larry) Silva
Bishop of Honolulu
General Decree Concerning the 2024 Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary
While this very important celebration is usually on December 8, since that is a Sunday of Advent this year, all the Masses for December 7/8 must be for the Second Sunday of Advent. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is transferred to Monday, December 9. Although the Paulist Press Ordo says it is not a day of obligation this year, in order to give due honor to our national patroness, and since the Diocese of Honolulu only observes this Solemnity and the Solemnity of Christmas as holy days of obligation, I hereby decree that the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is to be celebrated on Monday, December 9, 2024, as a HOLY DAY OF OBLIGATION in the Diocese of Honolulu. Pastors are to schedule Masses so that all may observe this holy day of obligation and to publicize that it is a holy day of obligation well in advance of December 9. Any Vigil Mass celebrated
on Sunday, December 8 is to be a Mass for the Second Sunday of Advent, not for the Immaculate Conception.
This decree is to be promulgated as law through publication in the Hawaii Catholic Herald and in the diocesan eNews.
Given at the Office of the Bishop on September 26, 2024.

ʻOhana Mass, Nov 23
|
|
|
Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu
From the Office for Social Ministry
At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.
Live stream available at Mary, Star of the Sea's YouTube Channel.

Saint of the Week
Saint Charles Borromeo
1538–1584
Memorial – November 4
Charles Borromeo was born in the Castle of Arona in the Duchy of Milan, into a well-established and influential noble family from northern Italy. Charles’ father was the Count of Arona, and his mother was from the prominent and powerful Medici family. Charles was the second son among six children. Typically, the first son inherited most of the family wealth and titles.
