HELLO FROM THE BLBCA

We are hoping not, but it looks like we might be heading for an early end to our  winter season. There is still lots of great snow to be found in the high country, where our BLBCA lodges are located, but it feels pretty springlike in the valley bottoms. I am not sure about the groundhog-seeing-it's-shadow deal, but while ski touring last weekend our group did notice that a canine of some kind had vacated their winter home, perhaps a more reliable sign of things to come.

In my role as executive director of the BLBCA I am very fortunate to know all the owner/operators of the 32 BLBCA member lodges. They are an amazing bunch of very accomplished folks, operating sophisticated, welcoming lodges in the remote BC backcountry. Our recently launched Mountain Escapes podcast series has allowed me an opportunity to better understand the challenges, successes and hear some of the wonderful memories those lodge owners have to share. They are truly in very unique situations. I encourage you to listen in when you have a few minutes.

THE HIDDEN GEMS OF THE BC BACKCOUNTRY

If you like to be away, truly away, in the splendour and stillness of the wild where the conveniences of modern life cannot reach you—the Backcountry Lodges of British Columbia (BLBCA) are calling. Nestled into some of the most remote wilderness in the province, the more than 30 lodges of the BLBCA share the stage with carpets of wildflowers, glaciated cirques, meandering trails, steep alpine faces, exposed shoulders and dramatic ice heaves.

There’s a reason over 10,000 backcountry users a year love it out there: there’s nothing quite as rejuvenating and bucket-filling as the combination of nature and physical activity.

Adventure Tourism is a cornerstone of BC’s visitor economy.

Adventure travel is an activity, vacation or leisure travel that can take place in unusual, exotic, or wilderness destinations. These activities include hard adventures (rock climbing, backcountry skiing, mountain biking) or can be softer adventures (snowshoeing, hiking, SUPing, trail running). The level of difficulty is up to the traveller.

BLBCA members offer many of these adventure travel experiences in a comfortable, lodge-based environment. Guests are often led by experienced, certified guides, allowing them to experience “real” wilderness in a safer environment, with many of the amenities and comforts of being at home.
