Best wishes, Katy Dolman The 3 Minute Thesis (3MT®) is a national competition that challenges Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students to effectively explain their research to a non-specialist audience in just three minutes. The aim is to cultivate their academic, presentation, and research communication skills while celebrating the exciting research conducted by HDR students across the country. Communication Skills for Effective Relationships When: 4 May 2023, 10:00am - 12:00pm As the second workshop in the Mental Health and Wellbeing Series, in this session Jane Turner Goldsmith discuss and demonstrate the basics of conflict resolution. These skills together provide a solid foundation for harmonious and productive relationships in your life as an HDR and beyond. Register here Turbocharge Your Writing When: 9 May 2023, 1:30pm - 4:00pm Would you like to know the secret to high output, low stress scholarly writing? Then join us for this workshop presented by Hugh Kearns from ThinkWell to learn how to increase your writing output. Following the workshop you will understand why it’s hard to get started, know how to set a writing plan and stick to it, and how to greatly increase the number of actual words you produce. Register here eProcurement Information Session When: 11 May 2023, 10:30am - 11:30am This workshop will explain why the University uses the eProcurement system and how to use it. It will cover getting access to the system through to receiving the goods. Register here. Flexing your communication style When: 16 May 2023, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm In this workshop you will identify your own preferred communication style and workplace preferences, reflect on how your preferences and communication style influence your workplace relationships, and learn how to "flex" your communication style to allow you to forge positive relationships with colleagues. Stand Up, Speak Up and Persuade When: 18 May 2023, 10:00am - 11:00am How is it that two people can talk about the same thing, but only one gets their message across? That’s because it’s all in the delivery. If your job is to persuade and influence others, these techniques will help you to build on your presentation skills and excel. Attend this workshop presented by Sharon Ferrier from Persuasive Presentations to learn how to stand up, speak up and persuade! The Self-Reflective HDR When: 24 May 2023, 10:00am - 12:00pm Are you keen to improve your success, performance, and wellbeing by learning how to find and use your strengths, understand your personal qualities, characteristics and resources? If you are looking to achieve balance in your life, join Jane Turner Goldsmith for the third session of the Mental Health and Wellbeing series. Creativity Workshop: Revealing hidden value using Creativity and Evolution - New for 2023 When: 25 May 2023, 12:30pm - 3:00pm Workshop Outline: Creativity and Evolution drive change our world. However positive change hinges on our ability to sense and communicate hidden value within everyday situations. Yet we are too often stuck in our habits and lack energy for curiosity and exploration. We need to embrace life as a Moving Puzzle. Workshop Objectives: Drawing on 10+ years of diverse coaching experience, combined with 15+ years working in Defence, Dean will facilitate participants through a series of movement situations based on concepts drawn from cognition, play, neuroscience, mindfulness, biology, and psychology. Please note this is an interactive workshop, and attendees will be required to actively participate. Other Training & EventsData Entry and Processing in SPSS This beginner hands-on training is designed to familiarize you with the interface and basic data processing functionalities in SPSS. We will examine several “must know” syntax commands that can help streamline data entry and processing. Data Manipulation and Visualisation in R R is quickly gaining popularity as a programming language for data scientists and researchers. It has an excellent ecosystem including RStudio and a massive online community of users for support. In this intermediate-level, live coding, and researcher-focussed workshop we will use the dplyr, tidyr, and ggplot2 libraries to manipulate, reshape, and visualise data. NewsArtificial Intelligence Library Guide The library has released a How-To guide on Artificial Intelligence which provides information about using generative AI tools for study in an ethical, responsible and evaluative way. The guide provides an introduction to some of the AI tools available, how to cite and acknowledge their use, and the use of such tools in research articles intended for publication. 2023 Visualise Your Thesis Competition Registrations are now open for the 2023 Visualise Your Thesis competition. HDRs are challenged to present their research in a sixty second visual display. First prize wins $1000 and will go on to compete in the International online competition. All successful submissions also qualify for 5 CaRST points. To register your interest, visit the Visualise Your Thesis webpage before 29 May. CaRST Tip? Attended a CaRST event but the record is ‘blank’ in the approval status column? No worries! These were automatically approved by the system when we marked attendance. You don’t need to wait for ‘approved’ to appear - this status is reserved for self-recorded activities that come to us for review. You are also not required to attach evidence. Happy days!
