Click here Council incentive policy to encourage housing investmentInfrastructure charges for the development of social and affordable housing will be waived as Council pivots to do its part to help address the under supply. Council endorsed another Development and Investment Incentive Support Policy, which encourages development that adds to the city’s housing and rental stocks, broadens the economy, enhances key centres, and revitalises the CBD. Development of specific residential developments in key zones, in particular but not limited to Gordonvale, Babinda, Cairns City and Cairns North, will be encouraged through waiving of infrastructure changes. Council will also provide $100,000 annually, over the next three years, to help revitalise vacant shop fronts in the CBD. The delegates joining this roadshow are from Vietnam, China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, South Africa and Europe and are looking to invest from $1 million to $15 million in the region. As an example, the TNQ Plastics Industry Recycling investment opportunity will be presented to showcase the region’s potential to support a circular economy pathway for plastics in local manufacturing, alongside farm and industrial estate visits. Renew Cairns works with the community and property owners to make vacant properties available for use by creative projects, and provide opportunities for local creative industries to trial their ideas. Creative participants have included projection and music installations, botanical teas and sparkling drinks, an indigenous art gallery, handmade bath and beauty products, bespoke tailoring, leathcrafts, arts collectives. All participants hold opening events, workshops or gatherings to bring people into the CBD and benefit surrounding businesses. Renew Cairns has activated seven spaces and given opportunities to over 30 makers and artists in this time.
