Bishop's Homily for the Ascension of the Lord

Homily of the Most Reverend Larry Silva, Bishop of Honolulu

[St. John Vianney Church, Kailua (Confirmation & First Communion); Holy Family Church, Honolulu (Confirmation & First Communion)]

“What would Jesus do?” is a saying that has become very popular. WWJD can sometimes be seen on bumper stickers, bracelets, and T-shirts. But I will confess that it is a saying I do not like very much. It’s purpose, of course, is to help us reflect on Jesus so that we can imitate him and be faithful disciples. But the reason I do not care for this saying is that it implies, “What would Jesus do IF he were still here?” It looks to the Jesus of the past. The reality, however, is that Jesus is still here. He is still active among us, and he is very much alive. Like the first disciples of Jesus who looked up to him as he ascended into heaven, we still may need angels who tap us on the shoulder and say, “Why are you standing there looking at the sky? This Jesus who has been taken up from you into heaven will return in the same way as you have seen him going into heaven.” Read more...

St. Michael School in Waialua to End K-8 Instruction

After months of trying to raise the funds necessary to keep its doors open, St. Michael School in Waialua will close its kindergarten through eighth grade classes in the next academic year.

“For more than 82 years, St. Michael School has been the heart of the North Shore, a place where generations of children were nurtured not only in academics, but in faith, character and a true sense of belonging,” said Nicolle Baron, principal of St. Michael School, in a statement to the Hawaii Catholic Herald. “It has been more than a school; it has been a home for families, a foundation for lifelong friendships, and a thread that has quietly held this community together.”

Kainoa Fukumoto, who has played key roles at St. Michael for more than 15 years as a teacher, administrator, board member and parent, said the closure is a profound loss for him and for the community. Read more...

A Second Chance at Independence

From Catholic Charities Hawaii

In 2006, Catholic Charities Hawai`i saw a need for a place where youths could go after aging out of foster care. Most youths at 18 do not have the skills to live independently, let alone survive. They land up homeless or become victims of trafficking.  Many carry trauma and barriers that make independence feel out of reach.

At Catholic Charities Hawai‘i, we believe every young person deserves the opportunity to build a stable, independent future.  With no government dollars, Catholic Charities Hawai`i established the Horizon Home. There, it brought youths to live and help them establish goals, skills, and learn to be independent.

Horizons meets young people where they are. Many participants are transitioning from foster care, the juvenile justice system, or experiencing housing instability. Success for these youth requires more than rules—it requires trust, mentorship, and real-life experience.

Saint of the Week

Saint Bernardine of Siena
1380–1444
Memorial - May 20

Jozef De Veuster was the youngest of seven children born into a poor farming family in central Belgium. Jozef went to school until the age of thirteen, at which time he had to assist his father on the family farm. A few years later, after his older brother entered religious life, Jozef’s father sent Jozef to college to prepare him to take over the family business. At school, during a mission, he heard God calling him to religious life. At the age of twenty, Jozef followed in his brother’s footsteps and entered the Congregation of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary. Read more...
