The Dance and Health project which has been running since 2017, was set up by the NIHR Leicester Biomedical Research Centre’s (BRC) public involvement team as part of a broader arts-based approach to health research in collaboration with local dance companies, Moving Together and Aakash Odedra Dance. A study detailed in the journal Research Involvement and Engagement has revealed that these sessions have done much more than foster participation; there have been a wide range of social and community benefits with participating women playing a role in organising and planning sessions, development of friendships and networks, improved access to institutional resources like funding and expertise, and opportunities to engage in meaningful health and leisure activities. More than £4m invested in ideas to tackle inequalitiesSport England has awarded more than £4 million from to support ideas aimed at reducing inequalities in access to sport and physical activity. Their one-off Pilot Fund was open for six weeks in December 2023 and January 2024, by invitation only, and focused on ways to increase activity and decrease inactivity in disadvantaged groups. The fund also allowed them to test new approaches and ideas for funding and working ahead of the launch of the Movement Fund in April. It was open to more than 60 organisations whose funding requirements sat between the large-scale, long-term approach of Sport England system partners and the small-scale, one-off purpose of their former Small Grants programme. Report on trailblazing MSK Hubs pilot offers hope to millions suffering musculoskeletal painA pilot to test the potential of gyms, swimming pools and leisure centres to support millions of people suffering musculoskeletal (MSK) conditions has proven a success in a report by the ukactive Research Institute. MSK conditions are the primary cause of disability among older adults in the UK, affecting more than 20 million people every year. MSK conditions account for 30 million lost work days and up to 30% of GP appointments, with an estimated cost to the NHS of £6.3 billion a year. MSK conditions such as persistent back pain, arthritis and pain from knee and hip replacements often lead to poor mobility, loss of functions and mental health issues. Regular physical activity can help MSK sufferers to manage and reduce these symptoms. National Baby Swimming Week highlights joy of being active in water from early ageNational Baby Swimming Week, spearheaded by Swim England partner Water Babies, is back with the aim of raising awareness of the benefits of early years swimming. Now in its eighth year, the initiative ran until Sunday 8 September and pools across the country opened their doors to parents and carers, giving them the opportunity to introduce their little ones to the joy of water. There are many benefits for little ones to start swimming from an early age and continuing throughout their early years – not least the emotional, physical and psychological benefits of baby swimming that supports their development and helps them to learn a skill for life. ParalympicsGB team sends open letter to PMFollowing the launch of the Equal Play campaign a week ago, the ParalympicsGB team has sent an open letter to the Prime Minister asking for the Government to act now to ensure every child has the same access to PE at school. The letter includes suggestions from the team on how to improve equity in the physical activity sector:
