Bishop's Homily for the Thirteenth Sunday of Ordinary Time

Life can be very hard sometimes. It certainly was for this woman we read about in the Gospel. She was bleeding for twelve years, which not only made her very weak; it also kept her from attending the synagogue, since anyone bleeding was considered “unclean.” She was not only sick, but isolated. She was not just sitting around, moaning about her misfortune. She sought relief through many doctors. In the end, it was not medicine but faith that saved her, because she had so much faith in Jesus. Just touching his cloak, without even bothering him to pay attention to her, would be enough to heal her. It was this faith that Jesus commended, and she was healed from then on.

Life was hard, all of a sudden, for the synagogue official and his family. Their beautiful twelve-year-old daughter had become so sick that she was at the point of death. Yet he did not go to the medical doctors, but to Jesus, the great healer. Even when he was given the worst news, that his daughter had died, he still put his faith in Jesus, and, as we saw, Jesus raised the girl up from the dead. Read more...

With ‘Tears of Joy,’ Hilo Native is Ordained a Transitional Deacon

After years of discernment and preparation, Lawrence “Larry” Denis III is one step closer to becoming a priest.

Bishop Larry Silva ordained Denis as a transitional deacon June 9 at St. Elizabeth Church in Aiea, during a Mass rich with symbolism and meaningful touches chosen by Deacon Denis.

Before the big day, Deacon Denis made sure to spend time with Jesus in adoration to prepare his heart.

“My four seminarian brothers from California and I did a holy hour at the perpetual adoration chapel at Our Lady of Good Counsel a couple of hours before my ordination,” Deacon Denis told the Hawaii Catholic Herald. “It was so beautiful to spend time with Jesus together as I prepared spiritually for my ordination. After getting ready and praying a rosary, I went to the sacristy where I tried to stay focused on what was about to happen.” Read more...

Prayer Intention for July: Pastoral Care of the Sick

(ImagensstockBR / Shutterstock.com)

From the Office for Social Ministry

We pray that the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick confer to those who receive it and their loved ones the power of the Lord and become ever more a visible sign of compassion and hope for all.”
- Pope Francis’s Prayer Intention for July 2024: For the Pastoral Care of the Sick

As summer brings warmth, love, and joy into the lives of many, it also can contrast with the reality for those who are sick and alone, feeling isolated and forgotten. Pope Francis’s special prayer intention for the month of July focuses on the pastoral care of the sick and how we can be more compassionate with those who are suffering from illness. In his message titled "It is not good that man should be alone: Healing the Sick by Healing Relationships" for the 2024 XXXII World Day for the Sick, Our Holy Father reminds us of a central truth–that we were all welcomed into the world, made for love, and called to fraternity and communion; “this project of communion is so deeply rooted in the human heart.” It sustains us, especially during illness and vulnerability: “It is the first therapy we must adopt to heal society's diseases in which we live.” Pastoral care of the sick involves us in caring for relationships with God, family, friends, healthcare workers, all creation. Pope Francis asks, "Can this be done?" and answers with a focal point of his work Fratelli Tutti - Brothers and Sisters All: "Yes, it can be done, and we are all called to ensure it happens." We are all called to be more like “the Good Samaritan” who slows down, draws near, and tenderly cares for the suffering stranger. Read more...

Saturday, July 27, 2024 at 5:30 p.m.
Mary, Star of the Sea Church, Honolulu

From the Office for Social Ministry

At Mary, Star of the Sea Church on Oahu, parishioners established their Ministry for Persons with Disabilities by welcoming persons with varying gifts and abilities to celebrate the “’Ohana Mass.” Ushers who are members of the Knights of Columbus offer a warm welcome and escort them to the designated pews where they were able to better participate in the Eucharist. After Mass, the community continues fellowship together through a potluck supper where all joyfully serve each other with nourishing food and aloha. These “‘Ohana Masses” and potluck fellowship normally take place on the fourth Saturday each month, 5:30 PM at Mary, Star of the Sea where all are welcomed to celebrate and share their gifts as one ‘Ohana.

Saint of the Week

Saint Thomas the Apostle
Died c. 72
Feast - July 3

Saint Thomas the Apostle is best known for doubting the Resurrection of Jesus, when he said, “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands, and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe” (John 20:25). Prior to this, the Gospels refer to Thomas several times. The Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke list him among the Apostles but do not provide details about his call. One of the few personal details given about Thomas is found in John’s Gospel, which refers to him as “Didymus,” meaning, “Twin.” It is reasonable, then, to presume that he had a twin. Read more...
